UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ANDREWr UREN, OF PRINEVILJ, GREGON.
LEDGER-INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,096, dated May 22, 1894.
Application tiled May 13, 1893. Serial No. 474.106. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ANDREW UREN, acitizen of theUnited States, residingat Prineville, Crook county, State of Oregon, have invented an Improvement in Ledger-Indexes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the general class of reference devices and especially to a ledger index.
My invention consists of the construction and combination of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient ledger index whereby the accountant may, with convenience and with a minimum loss of time, refer to any particular name, and find the page in the index of the account desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my index showing one of the sheets partly pulled out. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation showing the mounting of one of the rollers. Fig. 4 is a view showing one of the sheets of paper E strengthened by fabric e.
A is a box or frame having secured to its base suitable fastenings, here shown as irons B which are of substantially a Z shape, said irons having in their lower arms the slots b by which they are readily iitted over and removably connected with screws c in the top of the desk C or other table used by the accountant. l
The front of the box or frame is a plane surface and is provided with the horizontal slots a, in vertical series. Within the box or frame are mounted the rollers D in vertical series, of which there may be one or more, here shown as two series, one in front of the other, to provide for the required number. These rollers are of the ordinary spring-actuated type resembling the ordinary curtain V ets d from which they may be removed as paper extends and projects through a slot a in the front of the box or frame, and to said edge is secured a bar F which forms alimiting stop, said bar having its ends projecting beyond the ends of the slots and adapted to come in contact with vertically disposed buffers or cushions G on each side of the plane surface of the frame, said buffers or cushions being of any suitable character, here shown as rubber bands. Each of these cushions serves as a buffer for all of the bars,`and extends from near the top of the frame to near the bottom.
To the middle of each bar or limiting stop is secured a pull-tag H made of leather or other suitably strong material and upon each tag are printed or marked the letters of the alphabet consecutively throughout the series, one or more letters being upon each tag.
Upon the sheets of paper are written the various names of the customers, together with the number of the page on which the account in the ledger is to be found. These names are arranged alphabetically, each letter having either a separate page or more than one, or as here shown two letters being devoted to each page, which, in practice, will be found sufficient. The device being beside the accountant can be readily reached. When he wants to find an account all he has to do is to reach over and take hold of the proper pull-tag, and by pulling upon it he will pull the sheet of paper out, thereby exposing the names upon its face. When he has found what he wants, he releases the sheet, which,
under the iniuence of its spring roller, will IOO Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
An improved index comprising a box or 5 frame having a plane surface and a vertical actuated rollers within said box or frame,
strips or sheets of paper bearing the references wound upon the rollers, with their free ro ends projecting through the slots in the frame, cross bars secured to said free ends of the strips having indexed pull-tags secured at or near the center of said bars, said bars having their ends projecting beyond the end I5 walls of the slots to form limiting stops, verseries of slots in its front, a series of spring.
hand.
