GEORGE ROOKE, OF EMPORIA, KANSAS.
GARM ENT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,859, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed September 29, 1893. Serial No. 486,812- (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Rooxn, of Emporia, county of Lyon, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Garment-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 4
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, convenient, effective and ornamental device for protection of the user at table.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of my protector, with the extension depressed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the extension elevated. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the subject matter of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows the hinge joints detached and in juxtaposition. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation, showing a modified form of clamp for securing the shield to the table. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the same, with the shield detached.
Referring to the numerals on the first four figures of the drawings: 1 indicates a bridge having boxes 2 at either end and transverse pins 3 and 4. To the bottom' of each of the boxes is secured a spring clip 5. l
6 indicates a screen or shield frame preferably made of wire bent in a somewhat square shape and having its ends bent downwardly and twisted to form pivots, as indicated at 7.
8 indicates the extremity of one end of the wire projecting outwardly to form a strip, and 9 indicates the other extremity bent nearly at right angles to the part 6 to form another strip. The strips strike against one or the other of the pins 3 andat and limit the movement of the frame upon its hinge joints. The face of the frame is covered with any suitable impervious material, as for example, celluloid, ivory, gold, silver, or other ornamental material, secured to the frame by any suitable means. I also preferably employ an adjustable extension frame 10 preferably provided with a central rib 11, and, parallel thereto, a supporting rod 12.
13 indicates a centraltubular support upon the frame 6 adapted to-receive and adj ustably support the rod 12. The extensible frame is also covered with material to correspond with that used on the frame.
Instead of the simple spring clips, I prefer to employ a clamp 14 secured, as by rivets, to the bridge 1 and curved so as to come underneath the edge of the table. Upon'this is pivoted, as indicated at 15, a leaf 16, carrying on its under side one half of a cam 17. Upon the bottom of the clamp against the part is secured a movable cam piece 18; and the clamp is adapted when the parts are set in position to press the leaf firmly against the bottom of the table and secure the clamp in position. The ends of the frame 6 are bentto form a joint with the bridge, instead of twisted to form a pivot, and have projecting ends to limit the rocking motion of the frame. v
I do not confine myself to the details of construction herein shown and described but reserve the right to modify and vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is 1. The combination with an extensible garment shield, of mechanism adapted to fixedly adjust the same, substantially as specified.
2. In a garment protector, the combination with an extensible frame and shield, of mechanism at one end thereof secured thereto tensible shield pivotally carried thereon, substantially as specified.
5. In a garment protector, the combination with a movable shield, of a retaining device pivotally supporting the shield and adapted to be secured to a table, and stop mechanism adaptedto limit the movement of the shield, substantially as specified.
6. In a garment protector, the combination opposite thereto to the clamp, substantially 10 with a plurality of frames adjustable with reas and for the purposes specified. spect to each other, of shields of impervious In testimony of all which I have hereunto material secured to said frame, substantially subscribed my name.
5 as specified.
7. The combination with a frame, shield and bridge, of a clamp secured thereto,a leaf Witnesses: pivoted to the clamp, one part of a cam se- W. E. MARINED, cured to the leaf and another part pivoted GUSSIE FLETCHER.
GEORGE ROOKE.
