BARBERS SHEARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,969; dated April 10, 1894;

SerialNoA90,550- (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ELIJAH TOLMAN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Tannton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbers Shears, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shears or scissors intended especially for use by barber-s or hair cutters, and it consists in the construction hereinafter described, whereby, when the hair is being cut in the vicinity of or on the neck, the small, short hairs thus removed will fall into a trough or receptacle attached to the shears, instead of dropping outside the shears, and, as is apt to be the case, inside the collar of the person having his hair cut.

The nature of the invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View showing my improved shears in use. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the shears. Fig.3 is a view of the under side.

A B represent the two jaws orblades of the shears.

O is a trough or receptacle secured to one of the jaws. This trough is long and comparatively narrow and shallow, but isbroad and deep enough to catch and retain great numbers of short hairs such as are clipped from the neck or near the neck, and prevent them from dropping between the neck and collar. The trough consists of a bottom 0, ends 0 and side (3. Thecoruers are preferably somewhat rounded,-as shown.

The preferable method of applying the trough or guard to the shears, is to set the inner edge of the bottom 0' under the blade and screw it to the under or outer edge thereof with screws D. In order that the-trough or guard may be adjustable, so as to be moved up as the blade is shortened by wear and sharpening, long slots E are provided through which the screws are driven.

The trough will hold thousands of small short hairs, but in case it becomes full, the

shears are reversed by the operator and room vided for receiving the cuttings of the wick.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction above described, whereby the blades of barbers shears are furnished with long, narrow, shallow, adjustable troughs, for receiving the ends of short hairs, as above described.
