PATENT QFFICE WILLIAM H. KRETSINGER, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRADLE-SNATH BANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,935, dated January 2, 1877; application filed September 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KRETS- INGER, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bands for Cradle- Snaths; and I do hereby declare that the fol; lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of an elevation, showing the snath and wingband at right angles to the blade. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the snath and wing-band, showing the attachment of the blade; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the snath and wingband, showing the side from which the heelpost projects. Fig. 4 is a horizontal vertical sectional view of same.
This invention relates to snaths for graincradles; and it consists in the novel construction of a metal band or ferrule to protect and prevent the heel-post of a cradle-snath from splitting when said heel-post is inserted therein, as will be hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the heel end of a scythe-snath, on which is sleeved a metal wing-band or ferrule, B, consisting of the inner portion B and outer portion B The inner portion B has three small perforations, b, and an elongated slot, b, said perforations 1) and slot 12 being for the attachment of the scythe-blade. The outer portion B of the ferrule B is extended beyond the perforations A in the heel end of the snath, forming a guard, so that when the heel-post is driven into said perforations A this guard or outer portion B operates to prevent the heel of the snath from splitting. Said portion B of the ferrule is perforated at d, to register with the perforations A in the heel end of the snath, as shown in the drawings. The ferrule B is cut away at the sides at B to lighten it and lessen the amount of material employed.
The construction ofthis device may be modified in any desired way, provided the outer protecting portion or band is retained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ferrule B for snaths, consisting of the inner portion B having the usual perforations 1) b, and the outer portion B with per forations d, to register with the perforations A in the heel end of the snath, constructed substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the pre ence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. KRETSINGER.
