Description
R. W. ILIFF. Harvester Gutter-Bar.
No. 199,551. Paten-ted 12.5.22,1878.
' ATTORNEYS.:l
N PETERS. PHOTU LITHOGRAPHER UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
RICHARD W. ILIFF, OF GLEN GARDNER, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER CUTTER-BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,551, dated January 22, 1878,' application led October 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known that I, RICHARD W. ILIFF, of Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cutter-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of a perspective of my cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail thereof.
My invention relates to that class of cutterbars for reapers and mowers in which the knife is made in sections, and the said sections slide in the knife-bar 5' and it consists in the construction of the knife-bar and knife` sections, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the cutter-bar proper, provided at the inner end with the head B, for attachment to the operating mechanism.
vIn the top of the cutter-bar is made a longitudinal groove, a, running near the back edge, as shown in Fig. 3.
C represents a plate or bar, provided `on its under side, along the rear edge, with a rib, b, extending the entire length thereof, and of such width as to coincide with the part of the cutter-bar A between the rear wall of the groove a and the back edge thereof. The plate or bar C is riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the back portion of the cutter-bar A, leaving a space between the two in front of the groove a, and the plate C is made narrower than the cutter-bar A, so as to allow the cutter-bar to project in front of the plate, as shown.
The knife is made in sections D D, each of which is formed with a plate, D', to pass between the parts A and C, forming a shoulder, d, against the front edge of the plate or bar C, and another shoulder, d1, underneath, corresponding with the front edge of the cutterbar A. On the under side of the plate D of each knife-section is formed a longitudinal rib or tongue, d2, to fit in the groove a of the cutter-bar A.
The knife-sections D D can thus be made to slide in, one by one, from the end of the cutterbar, and when all the sections have been put in a key, G, is placed at .the end between the bar A and plate G, and said key fastened by a screw, h, or other suitable means, so that it can be easily removed, when required, to take out any one or more of the knife-sections for sharpening or other purposes. 4
By this peculiar construction of the bar, plate, and knife-sections, the several parts are easily and rmly united, leaving little or no opportunity for displacement in any direction, while the upper surface of the knife is brought up to the plane of the plate, and allows the Ygrain to pass o freely and without choking.
It is also obvious that the knife-sections can be constructed at small cost, inasmuch as its body and rear extension are of uniform thickness, and can be struck up into the desired, shape from a single piece of metal.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a cutter-bar for reapers and mowers, the combination of the bar A, having longitudinal groove a, the plate with rib b, and the knifesections D, having extensions D', with shoulders d d1 and tongue d2, all substantially .as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD W. ILIFF.
Witnesses M. G. BELL, ELEAZAR SMrTH.
