THEODORE G. SELLEOK, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO GEORGE H. OORBIN AND LANT K. SALSBURY, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,173, dated March 27, 1894.
Application fi July 3, 1893- Serial No. 479.423. (Ndmodel) .To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LTHEODORE G. SELLEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved door fastener, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed outin the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, showing the button and knob in section; Fig. 3 a detail of the button; Fig. at a detail of the stem. Fig. 5 represents my device applied to a door; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of a part of the same on the line 66 of Fig 5.
. Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a knob of wood, or other suitable material, having an axial opening to receive the outer end of the stem B, which latter is cylindrical in form and provided at the inner end with a square head B, having parallel flattened opposite sides. The button proper consists of a sheet metal plate 0, having a central opening O, to receive the cylindrical part B of the stem, and having its sides D, D, turned up at right angles to embrace the head B, and engage the opposite parallel sides thereof. By turning up said sides as described, said plate is stiffened and forms a suitable button to hold the door, and by en gagement of its upturned sides with the flattened opposite sides of the head, it is prevented from turning on the stem and turns with the same.
The device is applied by first inserting the stem B in the opening O and pressing the head B between the upturned sides D, D, the stem is then passed through a suitable hole in the door E located so that when the button is turned at right angles to the edge of the door its end will project beyond said door and engage the casing F, the knob is then placed upon the outer end of the stem and adjusted to fit the thickness of the door, and secured by a screw, nail, or glue as most convenient.
By the described construction I am able to provide a cheap and strong fastening for a door, that is easily applied and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim is- 1. In a door fastener, abutton consisting of a metal plate, having a central opening and turned up sides, and a stem having a cylindrical part passing through said opening, and a head having parallel flattened sides, engagin g the upturned sides of the button, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a door fastener consisting of a button of sheet metal, having a central opening, and upturned sides, a cylindrical stem having ahead, having parallel flattened opposite sides to engage the upturned sides of the button, and a knob having an axial opening to fit said stem, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE G. SELLEOK.
