UNITED STATES ATENT reins,
EDXVARD HARRISON OARLETON, JR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SHlRT-BOSOM PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 515,650, dated February 27, 1894. Application filed May 23, 1893- Serial No. 475,227- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD HARRISON OARLETON, Jr., of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt-Bosom Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My inventio'nrelates to a shirt protector, and it has for its object to provide a device of simpleand economic construction and capable of being expeditiously and conveniently applied to the side margins of a shirt bosom, which device when so applied will serve to hold the bosom away from the person of the wearer, and will likewise serve to m aintain the bosom without creases arid without wrinkles, while at the same time the device will not interfere with the movement of the body of the wearer of the garment, since the device will yield to any movement in a forwardly direction and will cause the bosom to bend in response to such movement in'a gradual manner, thereby not breaking it; and the moment that the person of the wearer is restored to an upright position the bosom will be brought to its normal or straight position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of th a several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a view illustrating the application of the device to a shirt bosom, a portion of the bosom being broken away, showing a portion of the device in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device; and Fig. 3 is a section taken practically on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, through the shirt and through the device, further illustrating the manner of its application.,
The invention consists of a resilient strip 10, which strip is quite narrow and of a length substantially that of the shirt bosom at its side edges. The strip 10, may be made of steel, whale-bone, or equivalent elastic material, and it may be and preferably is provided with a covering of fabric or other prol tective material, although such covering is not absolutely necessary. The strip is provided at suitable intervals in its length, for example at each end and at its center, with clips 11, of any approved construction. The clip shown in the drawings, while it constitutes no portion of the invention, is one of the preferred form employed, and comprises two gripping jaws 12 and 13, having a hinge connection, the said jaws being spring-controlled and operated through the medium of a cam tongue 14:. The gripping surfaces of the jaws of the clip, as shown in Fig. 3, are preferably located as near as possible to one side edge of the stay strip 10.
In operation, the body of the shirt adjacent to the sides of the shirt bosom, is carried back under the shirt bosom, as shown at a in Fig. 3, and the stay strip is then placed in engagement with the unfolded portion of the shirt bosom, and consequently back of the bosom, as likewise shown in Fig. 3, and the jaws of the clip are made to engage with the side edges of the bosom, thus holding the stay strip in position. A stay strip is employed for each side of the bosom, as shown in Fig. 1, and said stay strips extend practically from end to end of its side edges. It will likewise be observed that the stay strips are not at all visible, as they are located at the back of the bosom, and being so located the strips serve to hold the bosom away from the person of the wearer of the garment, and while the strips will curve in response to the forwardor thebackward movement of the wearer, and will cause the bosom to curve in the same direction but not break, when the wearer assumes an upright position the stay strips will restore the bosom to its normal straight position. By maintaining the bosom away from the person of the wearer it is not so liable to become damaged by perspiration, and by preserving it straight and smooth the bosom is not so liable to become soiled by rubbing against an outer garment.
It will be understood, that the clips or fastening devices may be detachable from the strip, or that the strip may be placed in a pocket formed at the margin of the bosom, either detachably or permanently.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters the jaws of which are adapted to grasp the Patent bosom edge and secure the stay thereto, sub- As an improved article of manufacture a stantially as set forth. shirt bosom stay comprising a strip of resi1i- EDWARD HARRISON OARLETON, JR.
