SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,223, dated February 20, 1894.

Be it known that I, THOMAS A. HENDER- SON, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the smoke box of an ordinary locomotive boiler, and in particular my invention is an improved baffle plate designed to be used in said smoke boX.

Heretofore baffle plates have been riveted in the smoke box and when a flue bursts or it became necessary to repair the boiler, this plate had to be removed, and to do this it took from four to six hours.

The object of my invention is to provide a baffle plate which is securely held in place and still is easily removable requiring only about fifteen minutes to remove the same, so that access can be quickly had to the forward end of boiler.

\Vith this object in view my invention con-V sists in a readily removable baffie plate and an adjustable deflecting apron secured to the bottom of the same.

My invention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a smoke chamber showing my spark arrester in place and, Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.

Referring to the drawings A indicates the forward portion of an ordinary locomotive boiler, 13 a horizontal platform and C an inclined perforated screen providing a spark arresting chamber D. At the juncture of the screen and platform I secure a depending frame E essentially rectangular in shape open at its bottom and comprising the horizontal member e and the side or vertical members 6 said side members being riveted to the side of the smoke box. At the ends of the side members are secured the angular lugs F F and near the ends of the horizontal member are pivoted the turn buttons G G.

H indicatesthe baffle plate which extends across the frame E, and rests upon the angular lugs F F the buttons G G being turned down upon the upper edge of the baffle plate, thus securely holding the plate in place upon the lugs. A handle his attached to the baffle plate, for the purpose of handling the same.

At the lower end of'the baffle plate is secured a deflecting apron I for the purpose of regulating the draft, said apron being connected to the baffie plate by means of the pins or rivets 2', the apron being provided with a series of perforations 11' t" by means of which the apron can be readily adjusted vertically whenever desired.

It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple form of baffle plate, one that can be easily removed and one that is provided with an adjustable deflecting apron for regulating the draft.

Having thus described my invention, What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a locomotive smoke box the combination with a platform and screen, of a rectangular frame, having lugs and buttons, and a baffle plate adapted to rest upon the lugs and held in place by the buttons substantially as shown and described.

2. In a locomotive smoke boxthe combination with a boiler and rectangular frame, of a baffle plate removably secured to said frame and a deflecting apron, adj ustably secured to the bottom of the baffle plate substantially as shown and described.
