Description
S. H. DICKERSON. GH I MNEY-CLEANERS.
- No. 195,445, Patented Sept.26,1877.
WITNESSES VENTOR ATTORNEYS.
NPETERS, PHOTOUThOGR APHER, WASHINGTONv D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. DIGKERSON, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 195,44t5, dated September 25, 1877; application filed March 7, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAML. H. DIGKERSON, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Chimneys; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of a machine for cleaning the soot from chimneys, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter particularly described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, the figure represents a perspective of my invention.
In the figure, A represents a bar, to which are connected the two bars B B, by means of connecting-rods a a and c c. The lower two of these connecting-rods, c c, are the longest, as represented, and all are pivoted to the bars, so that the side bars B B can work freely to and from the center-bar A. To the lower ends of the bars B B are secured the metal scrapers D D; and underneath, depending from these scrapers, is a triangular-shaped bag, E, for holding soot. To the upper ends of the bars B B are connected the cords d d, which join and form one cord above the bar A. e represents a cord, which is secured to the upper end of bar A. 1
This invention is operated as follows: The operator is at the top of the chimney, and
.drops the machine down, holding it by the cord 0. As it descends, the bars B B lie close to the bar A. and the bag is thus closed. When the machine has reached the bottom of the chimney or flue, the cords d d are pulled, and by this means the bars B B separate from bar A and open the bag, the scrapers at the same time pressing against the sides of the chimney and removing the soot and ashes. As fast as removed they drop into the bag and are drawn to the top of the chimney, and are there placed in proper receptacles, to be carried away.
The scrapers will be made of different sizes, to suit difi'erent-sized flues or chimneys, and are so arranged that they can be readily attached to or detached from the bars B B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bar A with its cord 0, and the bars B B with their cords d d, and connecting-rods a a and c c, in combination with the scrapers D D and the flexible bag E, connected to the scraper, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1877.
SAMUEL H. DIOKERSON.
