JOHN L. OOLES AND DAVID H. COLES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,885, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed May 25, 1893. Serial No. 475,474. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN L. COLES and DAVID H. COLES, both citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoop-Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hoop skirts and the invention consists in the novel features pointed out in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the hoop skirt. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the springs. Fig. 3
is a detail view of a modification. Fig. 4 is a detail view of another modification.
The vertical tapes A of the hoop skirt are secured to belt D in any well known way, and B represents the cross tapes or hands of the skirt. The skirt is provided with verticallyundulating springs 0. These springs enable the skirt to be readily compressed without tilting the skirt up and out on opposite sides. The springs can be secured to the tapes in any suitable well known way as by clasps or other fastenings.
In Fig. 2 the springs are shown running through suitable eyes or pockets in tapes A.
In Figs. 3 and 4 are shown two sets of springs secured to the tapes and to one another by clips or fastenings E.
In Fig. 4 the springs are shown secured to the tapes by clips or fastenings E, the two sets of springs being made to cross one another.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hoop-skirt, consisting of the vertical tapes A, the horizontal or cross tapes B secured to the vertical tapes, and the springs O undulating between the horizontal or cross tapes, extending from one to the other thereof and attached both to the vertical and to the horizontal or cross tapes,-substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN L. OOLES.
DAVID H. OOLES. Witnesses:
