Description

N0. 682,807. Patented Sept. l7, I90l. J. MINOR.
HOCKEY STICK.
lication filed Jan. 3, 1901 (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE MINOR, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOCKEY-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 682,807, dated September 17, 1901. Application filed January 3, 1901. Serial No. 41,949. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J EssE MINOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hockey-Sticks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hockey-sticks, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the puck may be manipulated with more case than the hockey-stick of the wellknown construction.
The invention consists in providing the hockey-stick with a guard or cup-shaped receptacle to receive the puck and enable the player to move the same along in said receptacle to the desired point.
The invention further aims to construct a devicev of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a hockey stick having my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of receptacle. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the lower end of the hockey-stick, having formed on its side a semicircular recess 2, the sides of the said recessed portion extending from the lower portion of the hockey-stick to the upper edge thereof at an angle, as shown at 3.
The reference-numeraM represents the wire,
which is semicircular in form and suitably fastened at 5 to the side of the hockey-stick, near the upper edge thereof,in close proximity to the semicircular-recessed portion.
The reference=numeral 6 indicates a series of ribs attached to the wire 4 and secured at 7 to the upper edge of the semicircular-re cessed portion of the hockey-stick. The semi circular wire 4 and ribs 6 form a guard, which may be made of a metal hood 8, as shown in the modified form, or may be constructed of any suitable material, such as leather, hard rubber, or the like.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my invention as heretofore described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings will be readily apparent, and it is thought that a further description as to the operation of the device is unnecessary. It will be noted, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction without depart ing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hockey-stick carrying on its lower extremity near the end thereof a semicircular wire and cross ribs, substantially as described.
2. A hockey-stick having formed on its lower extremity andon one face thereof a semicircular-recessed portion, and a guard arranged in close proximity to the said recessed portion, substantially as described.
3. A hockey-stick having 'formed on its lower extremity and upon one side thereof a semicircular-recessed portion, a semicircular wire arranged in close proximity to said re cessed portion and extending upwardly over said recessed portion, cross-ribs attached to said semicircular wire and connected to the upper edge of said semicircular-recessed portion, all parts being arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE MINOR.
