J. 0. LEE. WATCH PROTECTOR- N0 512,559. Patented Jan. 9, 1894.
Qf/SIfTNEES ESI r INVENTURI Uivrrnn STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN C. LEE, OE BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,559, dated January 9, 1894.
Application filed August 5, 1893. Serial No. 482,432. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN 0. LEE, of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in \Vatch-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention has relation to means for protecting a watch against damage by water, dampness, the fumes of chemicals, &5C.
It is the object of the invention to provide a highly efficient protector which can be manufactured and sold as an article of manufacture, and which may be self-adj ustable to watches of varying size, and at the same time be comparatively inexpensive.
The invention consists of a watch-protector comprising in its construction a circular elastic pouch, with an elongated extension for the ring and bezel, and an opening in one side for the exposition of the face, so that the device may be stretched over the watch complete, the edge of the opening fitting closely upon or around the edge of the crystal forming a water-tight joint at this point, and a waterproof protector to the watch as a whole, all as I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings-Figure l, is a front view of my invention complete shown as applied to a watch. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the invention, showing it detached. Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-, 4. of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I provide a circular elastic pouch of caoutchouc or other suitable material provided with an elongated extension a projecting from a suitable point of the periphery or edge. In one side of the circular pouch there is formed a circular opening, as set forth, at b. With this construction and arrangement of parts, the ring and bezel of a watch may be passed through the opening I), forced into the elongated extension a, and the circular or body portion stretched over the watch, with edges at the opening Z) resting upon or against the edge of the crystal, forming a water-tight jointalong said line.
If desired, the interior of the protector may be lined with cloth or any suitable material.
In order to provide the protector with means whereby a watch-chain may be attached to the protector, so thata watchinclosed therein may be rendered convenient of use, I may cement or otherwise secure to the sides of the extended portion a, a strip or strips of cloth 0, the folded part of which strip projects beyond the end of the elongated portion a of the protector, in which folded part there is secured an eyelet (Z or other device for the attachment of the watch-chain e.
If need be a bead can be formed on the protector at the edge of the opening I) so as to fit the more closely upon the edge of the crystal.
By my invention a device is provided which will exclude from the watch and its case all wet and dampness of every character, as well as the corrosive fumes of chemicals, 850., and yet leave the watch in condition to be used and inspected as a time-piece without obstruction.
It is to be noted that the invention is especially designed for use in connection with open-face watches.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is 1. A protector comprising in its construction a circular elastic pouch adapted to encompass the entire watch excepting the face and having an opening in one side for the exposition of the face, and an elongated extension for the reception of the ring and bezel, as set forth.
2. A watch-protector comprising in its construction a circular elastic pouch adapted to encompass the entire watch excepting the face and having an opening in one side for the exposition of the face, and an elongated exten two subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of Ausion for the reception of the ring and bezel, gust, A. D. 1893. i the elongated extension being provided exteriorly with means for the attachment of the JOHN Witnesses:
ARTHUR W. ORossLEY,
A. D. HARRISON.
5 chain, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of
