To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alturas, in the county of Modoc and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Charms, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to jewelry and more particularly to watch chain charms, and has for an object to provide a charm which can be conveniently worn on a watch chain as an ornament.

The invention comprehends, among other features, a charm consisting of a plurality of similar hemispherical sections, preferably made of glass and which are adapted to contain water, with representations of a vessel and land formed or placed in the hemispherical sections, with means connecting the sections for preventing the escape of the water therein and for supporting the connected sections on a watch chain or other supporting member.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this speciflcation, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower hemispherical section, the same having been removed from the upper hemispherical section; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View of the connectible hemispheres, a modified manner of forming a water-tight oint therebetween being shown.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a charm 10 consisting of a plurality of similar hemispherical sections 11 and 12, the hemispherical section 11 being preferably called the lower section and the hemispherical section 12 the upper section, the said lower section being provided with a circular flange 14 formed integral therewith and also having an annular ledge 14 formed adjacent the flange 13, the said upper section being provided with a circular depending flange 15 and a circular ledge 16, with the flange 15 of the upper section adapted to en 'a e the annular led e 14: of the lower.

section so that the flange 13 of the lower section will abut against the ledge 16 of the upper section, a suitable gasket or washer 17 being preferably inserted between the two sections 11 and'l2 to make the same watertight. The lower section is preferably filled with water and a small vessel 18 is arranged to float in the water in the lower section, land 19 or other representations being also formed in any convenient manner in the lower section and between which the vessel 18 floats, as shown, so that it will appear as if the vessel is passing through a canal bounded by a suitable shore.

Each of the hemispherical sections is provided with a semi-circular groove 20 arranged so that when the sections are connected as shown in Fig. 1, the grooves 20 will form a continuous indentation 21 and in which is arranged to lie a clamping band 22 provided at its medial portion with a supporting member 23, the ends of the band terminating in threaded bearings 24 adapted to receive the ends of a screw 25 therein and which, when screwed up with respect to the bearings, will secure the band in position to rigidly clamp the hemispherical sections 11 and 12 together and prevent any leakage of the water therein, while at the same time the member 23 formed integrally with the band 22 constitutes a suitable means for supporting the charm on a watch chain or the like.

The device as disclosed herein embodies a representation of the Panama Canal With a vessel shown as passing through the canal, the charm as disclosed in this instance, and with the mentioned representations, being adapted for use as a souvenir upon the event of the proposed Panama-Pacific International Exposition,

From the foregoing description and from the drawings it will be seen that the clamping band 22, and also the continuous indentation 21 for the band, lie in a plane perpendicular to the plane of connection of the,

hemispheres 11 and 12, the said hemispheres being horizontally connected and vertically supported. H

In Fig. 4L I disclose a modified form of my device and in which, I provide a different manner of forming a water-tight joint between the hemispheres 11 and 12. In that modified view it will be seen that the circular edge 26 of the lower hemisphere 11 is provided with an annular groove 27, semicircular in cross section and that the circular edge 28 of the upper hemisphere 12 is provided with a similar groove 29, the said grooves 27- and 29 being each continuous and adapted to register when the hemispheres 1t and 1.2 are pressed together. A circular washer 30, circular in cross section, is placed within the groove 27 and will project upwardly beyond the edge 26 of the lower hemisphere so that when the upper hemisphere is connected with the lower hemisphere the projecting portion of the washer will extend into the groove 29 of the upper hemisphere. It will now be seen that the edges 26 and 28 of the lower and upper hemispheres will abut with the washer 30 interposed between the upper and lower hemispheres and lying in the groove 27 of the lower hemisphere and the groove 29 of the upper hemisphere, thus forming a watertight joint between the hemispheres, it being of course understood that the hemispheres disclosed in Fig. i are secured in connected position by the same means disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, namely, the clamping band 22.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a charm, the combination with a plurality of similar hollow hemispherical sections, each provided with a circular groove formed in the circular edge thereof, with the said grooves adapted to form a circular continuous passage when the said sections are connected, of a gasket interposed between the said sections to lie in the said continuous passage upon connecting the sections, and the said sections being each further provided with a semi-circular groove formed in the outer curved face of the section and in a plane perpendicular to the plane of forma tion of the first mentioned groove of each section, the semi-circular grooves of the sections positioned to register when the sections are connected, a band lying in the second grooves and entirely encircling the said sections in a plane perpendicular to the line of connection of the sections, and means for connecting the ends of the band to rigidly bind the sections together and se cure the gasket rigidly in the continuous passage formed by the circular registering grooves in the edges of the sections, to form a water-tight joint at the points of connection of the sections.
