Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Oriana.
JAMES H. TAYLOR, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
WASHBOARD.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,914, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed January 5, 1893. Serial No. 457,403. (No model.) 7
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. TAYLOR, a oiti zen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve- Inents in Washboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wash-boards and especially to that class of boards which are provided with a protector said protector being adapted to adjust to the position of the operator, and to be adjusted for contracting and packing purposes. The present improvement adapts the said protector to be equal in length to the full length of the head-strip, thus rendering it more symmetrical as well as a more eifective protector to the extent of its increased length. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying. drawings, in which- Figure 1. is a front elevation; Fig. 2. a side elevation, and Fig. 3. avertical section on line A, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a detail View of the protector.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th rou ghout the several views.
Referring to the drawings 13. B. are the legs, D the head-strip, E the soapstrip, F the thin-back, G the protector, H the rub-zinc, and l, I, are springs.
In Fig. -l,is shown in detached position, the protector which by means of slots J. J. has formed upon its ends, preferably in an integral manner, pins K, K.
The head-strip D. shown in cross section in Fig. 3, has concavities L into which the upper edge M, of the protector is adapted to be pivotally, adjustably and removably secured by means of springs I, I,Which springs impinge against pins K as the said protector assumes the positions shown in the respective figures, as well as other positions intermediate thereto.
It willthus be seen that the said protector may be removed, placed upon either side of the board, or closed down upon the legs, at the will of the user.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wash board of the variety shown having a superimposed head strip overcapping the upper extremity of the board and extending forward, and back beyond the corresponding sides thereof, the said extensions having grooves upon their under sides adjacent to the work sides of said board, the said grooves being adapted to receive an edge of a removable protector which protector is operatingly secured within said grooves by means of springs lying under said head strip and operating upon pins upon said protector to secure it in operating position, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. TAYLOR.
