Unites States PATENT @rricn.
JAMES E. MCIVILLIAM, OF HUBBARDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CONDENSING=ROLL FOR WOOL CARDING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,641, dated December 26, 1893. Application filed December 12,1892- Serial No. 154.893- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. MOWILLIAM, of I-Iubbardston, county of iVorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Condensing-Rolls for WVool-Oarding Machines, of which the following description, n connection with the accompanying drawings, 1s a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In United States Patent No. 47 2,7 40, granted to me April 12, 1892, a condensing roll is 1 shown, the working surface of which consists of a hard twisted cord closely wound thereon spirally from end to end and suitably secu red to the roll.
This invention has for its object the production of a condensing roll having a better working surface and of greater extent than that shown in said patent, and is an improve ment on the construction therein set forth.
Figure 1, in side elevation and partly in section shows a condensing roll embodying my invention; and Fig. 2, is a left-hand end View thereof.
My invention relates to the covering for condensing rolls, and the same may be applied to any usual or well known form of condensing roll.
In carrying out my invention, I take the condensing roll a, and connect thereto near one end, as herein shown in dotted lines Fig. 2, by a plug a, one end of a large twisted or hard-spun cord b, and adjacent to the cord I secure one end of a small metallic wire 0, preferably copper, to the roll, and wind the wire and cord closely about the roll from end to end thereof, as best shown in Fig. 1, the opposite ends of the cord and wire being secured to the roll in any suitable manner. The working surface of the roll thus presents a series of large spiral ribs or corrugations which alternate with a wire wound in a spiral parallel thereto whereby adjacent ribs or corrugations of cord are separated and a larger and more irregular surface is obtained to rub the rovings or slubbings than would be the case if the wire were omitted and the cord The wire a not only serves wound closely.
to separate the ribs or corrugations of cord, but also to retain the same in place and prevent the cord slipping on the roll.
I find it advantageous to coat the surface of the roll with some varnish d having considerable body, in which to embed the cord and prevent any moisture getting through to the surface of the roll.
I do not desire to restrict myself to any particular size or composition of cord, nor to a copper wire, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. A condensing roll having an outer surface composed of alternate ribs or corrugations of fibrous and metallic material arranged in parallel spirals about the roll, the fibrous ribs or corrugations being of greater diameter, substantially as described.
2. In a condenser roll for carding engines, the combination with the roll, of an outer covering, said outer covering consisting of parallel strands of unequal size wound around the surface of said roll and attached thereto, and forming a series of transverse corrugations upon the outer surface of the roll, sub stantially as described.
3. In a condenser roll for carding engines, the combination with the roll, of an outer covering therefor composed of two series of contiguous ribs or projecting portions extending circumferentially about the roll and secured thereto, each rib or projection of one series separated from the adjacent rib of the same series by a different sized rib or projection of the other series, thus forming trans verse corrugations or undulations upon the outer surface of the roll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES E. McWILLIAM.
Yt itnessesz ALFRED O. MURDOCK, CHARLES H. PHILBRICK.
