IMPROVEMENT IN PACKINGS FOR ENGINES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,183, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY 0. WHITE, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Oombined Flexible Metallic and Fibrous Packing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
My invention relates to packing for the joints of boilers and vessels in which steam is generated or used; and consists in the novel construction of a rope composed of leaden wires and fibrous'material, as hereinafter described.
The letters a of the drawing represents strands or braids of cotton-wicking or other fibrous material of a soft and pliable character slightly spun or twisted, as shown, and the letters 0 represent wires of lead which are passed through, around, and longitudinally by the sides of said fibrous substance, as represented.
It will readily be seen that my packing presents the appearance of a rope of twisted or spun yarn or other fibrous materialinterspersed with wires of lead; and such, in fact, it is, with the exception that a series of leaden wires is of two witnesses.
