WIRE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601 ,540, dated March 29, 1898.

Application filed January 7, 1 8 98.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WINTRODE, of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain newanduseful Improvements in Wire Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fence-stays,and pertains to a twisted stay having laterally-projecting loops for attachment of the stay to the fence-strands by twisting them therearound.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a section of a fence with my stay applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached view of a stay embodying my invention, shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the wires in plan which form the stay, showing their position and shape before being twisted. Fig. 4 is a detached view of a stay embodying my invention, showing a modification in the form of the upper end of the stay.

In the accompanying drawings, B indicates the fence-strands, and A the stays.

In my present invention the stay consists of heavy wire a, which forms the body of the stay for withstanding the longitudinal strain,

twisted in with the heavy wire. This lighter wire is provided with laterally-projecting loops d,which are adapted to be twisted around the fence-strands,as shown in Fig.1 and hence form the means of attaching the stay to the fence. I preferably form these wires as shown in Fig. 3-that is to say, the heavy wire is doubled at the upper end, thus forming two The upper end may be formed into an ornamental shape, as shown at e in Figs. 2 and 3, or merely doubled plain, as shown at f, Fig.

4, without affecting or departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

The light wire 17 is formed with the loops (1 and extends parallel the heavy wire, and preferably, though not necessarily,its ends are doubled backward, as shown at h, and all the wires are then twisted together, as shown, producing a completed stay, as clearly illustrated. By turning the ends of the light wire back a stay is produced which is smooth in appearance and devoid of projecting ends except at its lower extremity. The twisting of the wires maybe efiected in any desired manner.

A stay constructed as above described is very easy of attachment to the fence as compared with a stay constructed as usual, in which the loops are formed of the stifi wire of which the body of the stay is formed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved fence-stay having its body formed of heavy wire and a smaller or lighter wire attached thereto and provided with projecting loops for attaching it to the fencestrands, substantially as described.

2. An improved fence-stay having its body formed of a plurality of heavy strands of twisted wire, and a lighter wire incorporated in the cable-like stay and provided with project-ing loops for the purpose described.

3. An improved fence-stay consisting of parallel strands of heavy wire, a parallel strand of light wire having its ends turned back and provided with intermediate laterally-projecting loops, all the strands twisted together into a cable-like stay, substantially as described.
