WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,545, dated December 26, 1893.

Application filed April 5, 1892. Serial No. 427,920. (No-model.)

-Be it known that I, ROBERT F.`PoRcH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spiceland, in the county of I-Ienry'and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

This invention relates to washing machines, and has for its object to provide a cover which will not interfere with the wringer, and which when thrown up will rest against one end of the suds box and catch any dri'ppings at that end, and which when replaced will empty said drippings into the suds box.

The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and coinbination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in

The suds box A may be any approved form and is vprovided in the upper edge of the sides with a forked casting B which is adapted to form a bearing for the journals of any well known rubber. The wringer C secured to one end of the suds box is of ordinary construction.

l The cover iscomposed of side pieces D notched in their lower edges to receive the upper end of the casting B, and the sheet metal top E which is secured to the front and rear ends' and the top edges of the side pieces D. The front ends of the side pieces slope and the rear ends curve. The side pieces are somewhat shorter than the sides of the suds box and are disposed so that the rear end ofthe cover comes about flush with the rear end of the suds box, the front end of the said cover coming inside or falling short of the front end of the suds box so as not to interfere with the wringer. The rear end of the cover forms a receptacle to catch drippings when the said cover is thrown up.

The cover has a hinge connection with the suds box by means of bars F which have their ends f bent at about right angles and passed through plates G that are adapted to be secured to the sides of the cover and the suds The hinge bar F and the plates G are disposed with reference to the cover and the suds box so that the said cover will rest squarely upon the suds box, as shown by the full lines in Fig. l, and squarely against the end of the said suds box when the cover is thrown up as shown by the dotted lines in the said figure. The hinged end of the cover is suiiciently curved to form a deep receptacle to catch a large quantity of drippings. When the cover is replaced the drippingswill be elnptiedinto the suds box. 1

The rear end of the cover curves on the arc of a circle whose center approximately corresponds with the pivotal connection of the bar F with the said cover so that the cover may be turned nearly into a vertical position before dropping it into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, or, can be elevated from the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l and brought over the suds box prior to closing it on the suds box,

,thereby preventing any drippings or water that may happen to be caught by the said curved end of the cover from falling on the Hoor. The cover is turned to and from the horizontal position while the curved end thereof is over the suds box. y

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a washing machine, the combination with the suds box, of a cover having its rear end curved and forming a drip receptacle, curved rods forming ahinged connection between the cover and suds box and disposed to permit the said cover kto -tilt from a horizontal to a vertical position, or vice versa,v

while the said drip receptacle is wholly above the suds box, and whereby the said cover can move bodily to drop squarely against the end of the suds box, substantially as shown for the purpose described.
