CURRIERS BEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,521, dated December 26, 1893.

To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO GEISLER, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourriers Beams, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in beams used by leather workers, and it consists of an improved coveringfor such beams, made of india rubber. Heretofore these beams have been covered with zinc, which while serving the special purpose of supporting and retaining the hide in place during the processes of scraping, friezing and scutching, is objectionable in this respect, that the curriers knife is liable to tear the hide, when worked upon the zinc covered beam. I have discovered that the whole difliculty may be avoided, and the hide supported without liability to rupture in the scraping, friezing and scutching by covering the beam with india rubber. For this purpose I may use the ordinary sheet rubber as it is sold in the market.
The object sought requires that the sheet of rubber be in a yielding condition, and present a yielding surface.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, represents the beam in side elevation; Fig. 2, a cross section on line :2cx of Fig. 1.
The beam shown at A, is of ordinary construction and is supported as usual, in an inclined position. The upper surface is rounded and instead of the ordinary covering,used heretofore, of zinc, it has a covering of sheet rubber, the exposed surface of which is to some extent yielding. This sustains the'hide and also yields with the skin, under the action of the knife, and thus prevents rupture of the skin and serious damage and loss in the leather.
I claim- In combination with a curriers beam, a covering of sheet rubber, substantially as described.
