To all whom it may concern.'
Be ity known that I, ALBERT LEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campello, in the county of Plymouth and State of E'lassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmproven'ients in Needle-Guides; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to *make and use the same. The present invention relates to needle guides for sewing machines and more particularly to needle guides for leather sewing machines. A
rlhe invention is designed primarily for use on shoe sewing machines which employ a curved hook needle although it is also capable of use on other types of leather sewing machines.
In the operation of shoe sewing machines the frictional contact of the leather with the -needle causes the needle to become heated, and this heating of the needle baltes thenine particles of leather and dust, which collect on the needle, into a hard scale. The scale which forms on the needle interferes with the movement of the needle through the needle guide and gives considerable trouble to the operator, especially when a new needle guide which closely fits the needle 'is placed in .thc machine. As heretofore constructed the needle guide, especially when new, soon becomes clogged with the scale so as to require frequent cleaning to cause the needle guide to operate properly or to avoid breaking the needle.
The object of the present invention is to provide a needle guide which will act. to remove the scale from the needle and which will not become clogged during the operation of the machine.

The invention contemplates forming the cutting edge or edges in any suitable manner but it is preferred to) form the cutting edge by cutting away the metal of the guide at the end of the perforation through which the needle passes so to form a beveled surface along which thc severed scale can pass The present invention will be clearly understood from an inspection of the accompanyingdrawing in which Figure l is a view in side elevation of so much of a well known sole sewing machine as is necessary to illustrate the'connection of the present invention therewith. Fig. 2 is a View in front elevation of the parts illustrated in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the perforated p0rtion of the needle guide and the hook needle passing therethrough.
With the exception of the perforated portion ofthe needle guide the mechanism illustrated in Figs. l and 2 is constructed and arranged as in thesole sewing machine disclosed in the patent t0 French and Meyer, No. 4-7 3,870, l indicating the work-support, 2 the awl,-3 th'e needle, and 4 the needle guide.
In the illustrated embodiment of the present invention the needle guide is provided with cutting edges 5, 6, 7 and 8, the cutting edges 5 and 8 being locatedat the front and rear sides of the guide respectively and completelyv surrounding the needle, and the cutting edges 6 and 7 being formed at the sides of a central slot which divide the perforated. portieri of the guide into two parts, these cutting edges, as shown,I extending only partl around the needle. by cutting away the metal of the guide S0 as to form beveled surfaces slo ing away from the needle. The cutting et ges extend close to the surface of the needle and act effcctively to remove any scale from the needle and to prevent the needle guide from becoming clogged. The provision of the cutting edges on the needle guidenot only `overcomes the difficulties which have heretofore been experienced when a new needle guide has been placed in a machine but also permits the use of a needle guide provided with a perforation which lits the needle snugly and accurately.
The lnature and scope of the present invention having been indicated and the preferred forni of the invention havin@ been specifically described, what is claimed is:
l. A needle guide for sewingr machines, provided with a cutting edge ari'anved to extend close to the surface of a. needle and remove scale from the needle during the sage of the needle therethrough.
2. A needle guide for sewing machines, provided with e perforation through which the needlepasses and having a cutting edge arranged to extend close to the surface of the needle and remove scale from the needle during the passage of the needle therepasmmm
through and formed by a bevel surface sloping away from the needle.
3. A needle guide for sewing machines provided with e erforation to receive the needle, a slot dividing the perforated portion into two parte, and cutting edges at the ends of the perforation. in each part er ranged to extend close to the surface of the needle and formed by bevel surfaces sloping away from the needle.
