Description

(No Model v W. W. GURRIER.
LEATHER SKIVING MACHINE. No. 281,979. Patented July 24, 1883.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER W. CURRIER, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
LEATHEHR-SKIVINVG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,979, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed April 23,1883. (N0 model.)
leather, during the operation of skiving, is
liable to be carried under the guard to and up on the cog-wheels that conduct the leather to the knife, thus destroying the boot-counter and rendering it necessary to stop the machine, remove the injured material, and replace another counter before the work can again proceed.
It is the object of my invention to overcome this difficulty; and to that end the invention consists of a guard-plate arranged in front of the feed-wheel and connected to the regular guard of the machine, so that the counter,
when taken by the feed-wheel, is carried through the machine without any danger or liability of being carried under the guard as now used, and subjected to the action of the cog-wheels, thus insuring perfect work and avoiding damage and loss of time.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of a skivingmachine of the character above referred to with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a front View of a guard embodying my improvement, of full size. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same, and Fig. 4 is an end view.
A is a portion of the frame of the machine. B is the feed-wheel, and G is the rotating bed which supports the counter on its passage to the knife, and D is the guard used in the machine, the parts being the same as those included in the machines covered by the patents of Fitzgerald above referred to, and need no further description.
To the guard D, I attach, by means of screws e e on the under side of the rear portion of the said guard, a plate, E, as shown in Fig. 3, by means of which the counter, when taken by the feed-wheel, is caused to pass through Without danger of being carried under the guard D or coming in contact with the cog-wheels.
The guard-plate E can be attached to the guard D without the necessity of changing any part of the machine, and it may be adapted to any machine of the same class other than that of Fitzgerald above mentioned, wherever applicable.
What I claim as my invention, andv desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The guardplate E, attached to and in combination with the guard D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. A
WALTER W. OURRIER.
