I F. A'. KEYES.
SHIELD FOR ROCKERS.
No. 510,799. Patented, Dec 12, ;1-893.
FRANK. A. KEYES, OF PALATINE, ILLINOIS.
SHIEILDFOR ROCKERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,799, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed June 1, 1893. Serial No. 476,306- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANK. A. KEYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palatine, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Rockers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shields for rockers, and it has for its object to provide the rockers of rocking chairs, settees, and the like, with a simple, cheap and effective shield, which shall not only prevent the rocker from overturning, or rocking too far, but shall also prevent the end of the rocker coming in contact with the mop-boards, furniture, or other devices, and injuring the same, and to these ends my invention consists in a shield having the general features of construction and adapted to be arranged for use, substantially as hereinafter more particularly pointed out. Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of an ordinary rocking-chair, having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2, is an enlarged side view of the end of the rocker, with the shield attached. Fig. 3, is an enlarged plan view; and Fig. 4, is an enlarged perspective view of the shield.
It is well known that rockers, such as rocking-chairs, and the like, are liable to be overturned by excessive movement, in which the center of gravity falls without the bearing surface of the rocker, and many devices have. been suggested for preventing such accidents,
and it is one of the main objects of my invention to provide a simple device which shall prevent such accidents, while another object is to utilize such device, not only for preventing accidents to the occupant of the chair, but to prevent injury to the furniture or house-trimmings, by the end of the rocker coming in contact therewith.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a shield substantially in the form shown, in which there is a bumper portion A, a body or web portion B, and a securing portion 0, the bumper portion being extended beyond the Web portion to form buffers D, D. This device may be made of any suitable material,
but preferably of rubber, and it is evident that it can be readily molded of the desired form and size.
In applying the shield to the rocker E, I form a perforation corresponding to the securing portion 0, as by boring an opening F transversely through the end of the rocker, and I mortise or otherwise connect this opening with the end of the rocker, by forming a channel G, preferably at an inclination to the base line of the rocker E, and this channel receives the web or body portion B, while the bumper portion of the shield projects beyond the end of the rocker, and extends also slightly below the line of the bearing surface of the rocker, so as to form a bumper by coming in contact with the floor, and thereby preventing'the overturning of the chair. The buffer portions D extend beyond the side lines of the rocker and prevent rubbing.
The shield may be applied to the rocker by simply sliding it in sidewise, the body and securing portions fitting the corresponding openings in the end of the rocker, and it may be secured in any suitable way, as by glue, or tacks, or other fastening devices, and when in position, it forms a simple, cheap and effective device for accomplishing the objects intended. While I have shown the buffing ends as rounded and that is the preferable form, it is evident that they can be otherwise shaped, as well as the bumper, which while shown round, might have other configuration, the essential feature being that it shall project beyond the bearing surface of the rocker to prevent its moving too far.
It will readily be seen that the shield can be applied to chairs already in use, requiring no additions, and simply forming a receptacle to receive the shield, which can be readily slipped in placeand secured.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a rocker having a cylindrical opening and a channel smaller than the diameter of said opening, and extending from the opening to the end of the rocker, of a shield comprising a securing portion tofit the opening in the rocker, a web connected to the securing portion and extending through the channel, and a bumper portion projecting beyond the rocker, substan- In testimony whereof I have signed my tially as described. name to this specification in the presence of m 2.
