FURNITURE SOCKET.
No. 254,310. Patented Feb. 28,1882

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, CHARLES HARING, OF WATKINS, NEW YORK.
FURNITURE-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,310, dated February 28, 1882,
Application filedJanuary 6, 1880. i
' To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, CHARLES HARING, of Watkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furniture Pads or Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a socket or pad adapted for placing under the legs of sol'as, lounges, chairs, and other articles of furniture to retain the furniture in place, so that contact with a wall will be prevented, such socket being made of durable material in a form to receive and retain a caster-wheel, and fitted with a pad of rubber or other soft material that rests on the floor.
In the accompanying d1 awings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A is my improved pad or socket, of which a is the body, that is made in circular form, with a recess, 1), in its upper surface; and 0 is a disk of india-rubber, leather, or other sdftame'lastic material, attached to the bottom of a by cement or b other suitable means.
The ody a is to be made of any hard or durable material-such as Wood, metal, or hard rubber-preferably of iron, which will be cheaper and give weight to assist in holding the pad in place. The underside of the body a is recessed to receive the disk 0, the annular shoulder 1 of the recess setting down over the sides of the disk to protect its edges and assist in retaining it in place. The disk 0 is made thick enough to project beyond the recess, so as to receive the entire weight and prevent contact of the body a with the floor or carpet- In use the socket A is to be placed beneath the furniture-leg, with the caster-wheel or end of the leg resting in the recess b. The recess 1) prevents the leg from slipping from the socket, and the furniture will be held from being accidentally moved. The rubber disk gives increased friction and prevents injury to the floor or carpet by contact of the metal body of the device. a
The shoulder 1 may be formed dovetailing to hold the rubber disk 0 more securely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the concaved body a I), having the annular bottom shoulder, 1, and the elastic disk 0, held by said shoulder, to form a socket for the rolling-casters that support furniture.
CHARLES HARING.
