CHARLES M. BLYDENBURGH, OF RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK.
HAMMER AND NAIL-EXTRACTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,525, dated December 12, 1893. Application filed September 26, 1893. Serial No. 486,543. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BLYDEN- BURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverhead, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammersand Nail-Extracting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hammer embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hammers, hatchets and other nail extracting devices in which a supplemental claw is formed and adapted to operate in conjunction with the main claw of such device to grasp and wholly withdraw a nail or like article first partially withdrawn by means of the main claw.
My invention consists in providing the eye portion of a hammer or like device-with a supplemental claw formed by splitting the said eye portion in the direction of its length, from apoint commencing at its top edge and extending toward the inner contracted end of the usual V-shaped slot formed between the jaws of the main claw, and expanding or spreading said split portion sidewise and toward the main claw as I shall hereinafter fullydescribe and claim.
In the said drawings I have illustrated my invention applied to a well known form of hammer, having the usual head A, main claw B, and eye portion 0 in which the handle D is secured. To form a supplemental claw at one side of the main claw, and to make said supplemental claw coincident with the main claw so that it may be made to grasp and wholly withdraw a nail or like article first partially withdrawn by said main claW,I form the side of the eye portion 0 nearest the main claw with a supplemental claw composed of the jaws a a and intervening V-shaped slot 1). This supplemental claw is formed by splitting the eye at the point designated in the direction of its length from its top edge to a point terminating short of the inner contracted end of the slot in the main claw, and spreading or expanding the split portion both laterally and toward the main claw. The spreading of the split portion of the eye laterally opens the slit at its top to form a V-shaped slot, and the spreading or expanding of the split portion toward the main claw forms the independent jaws a a of said supplemental claw, and removes their inner walls sufficiently far from the outer wall or side of the handle to permit the introduction of the head of the nail between the jaws a a. When so constructed the supplemental claw will be coincident with the main claw, and its slot will run in the direction of and will be in direct alignment with the slot of the main claw. Being thus located with reference to the main claw, this supplemental claw is made to grasp and wholly withdraw a nail or like article which has first been engaged and partially withdrawn by the main claw.
The construction described is very simple, and the forming of the supplemental claw by splitting the eye of the hammer, or device, avoids the casting or forming of jaws extending outwardly at right angles to the eye portion, which latter construction is not as strong and secure as forming the supplemental claw by splitting and spreading the metal of the eye portion as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hammer or analogous article having its eye portion for the handle split in the direction of its length, and having said split portion expanded outwardly and laterally to form a claw approximately parallel with the handle and composed of jaws and an intervening V-shaped slot.
2. In a hammer or analogous article having a main claw with V-shaped slot, the eye portion of said hammer adapted to receive the handle, said eye portion being split in the direction of its length with expanded portions extending laterally and toward the main claw to form a supplemental claw parallel with the handle and with its V-shaped slot coincident with the slot of the main claw.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES M. BLYDENBURGH.
