Description

G. M. BLYDBNBURGH.
NAIL EXTRAGTOR. v l
Patented oct. 10, 41893.
(No Model.)
VDI/mm UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. BLYDENBURGH, OF RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK.
.NAlL-ExTFRAcToR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,465, dated October 10, 1893.
Application filed April 7, 1893. Serial No. 469.411. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BLYDEN- BURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverhead, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail- Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the claws of hammers, hatchets, and other devices adapted for extracting nails, spikes and analogous articles, and it consists, essentially, in forming the claw of said devices with an inwardly turned portion bent back upon the main portion of the claw, and adapted to serve as a supplemental claw for the extraction of nails or equivalent articles that have first been partially withdrawn by the main claw, as I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
Figure l, is a perspective view showing my invention applied to a hammer. Fig. 2, is a similar View showing the invention applied to a Well known form of claw. Fig. 3,-is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. l. Fig. 4, is a front elevation of the claw end of the Same.
In Fig. l, I have disclosed a well known form of hammer having a head portion A, and handle B. In such hammers and in similar devices the claw thereof has usually been formed on a continuous curve extending from the eye of the hammer outward, but in the present ease I have formed a supplemental claw at the outer end of the main 'claw D by bending the outer end of said main claw backward upon itself so that it stands at an acute angle with the main claw as shown in Fig. 3. The V-shaped slot or opening F. formed in the main claw for the reception of the head of the nail or other article, usually increases in width from its inner to its outer end, but in the present case the jaws formed by this slot and forming the supplemental claw are brought together at their inner ends thereby closing or partially closing said slot and forming practically a second V-shaped slot a and independent jaws b for the supplemental claw F, the slotted entrance of both claws at their junction being widest at the outer end so as to readily receive the head of the nail. From this description it will be'seen that to extract a nail, the head of the same is engaged by the slot in the main claw and partially started or withdrawn for a portion of its length, when the main claw is released from its engagement with said nail, and the latter is then engaged by the supplemental claw and its complete withdrawal effected by the latter. The supplemental claw being set at acute an angle to said main claw, it is manifest that a long nail may be withdrawn from a piece of timber or other place without curving or bending the nail.
Thesame idea of main and supplemental' claws may be applied to the form of device shown in Fig. 2,and to any other nail-drawing device adapted for extracting nails, without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not limit myself to any particular form of tool, as the invention may be applied to any form of device using a main claw for engaging nails and like devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device for extracting nails and analogous articles, the claw thereof having a V- shaped slot and having its outer jaws bent backward to stand at an acute angle with relation to the main portion of the claw, said jaws having their extremities or free ends brought together to close the outer end ofthe main slot and form a supplemental claw and slot adapted to grasp and withdraw the article Afirst partially withdrawn by the main claw.
In testimony whereof Iaftix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
