Patented Nov. 28, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILL .I. WORDEN, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
COIN-PURSE.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,504, dated November 28, 1893.
Application'filed March 16, 1893. serial No. 466,345. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILL J. WORDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a Device for the Introduction of Coin into a Purse, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in purses or coin holders, and it has for its prime object to provide such devices with means whereby a coin may be used to effect an opening to the purse; the same being done by simply pressing such coin against a spring backed plate, which when the coin has fallen into the purse will return to its normal advanced position, and close the entrance.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l, is a front View of a portion of a purse, with my improvements applied. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view.
Referring by letter to said drawingsz-A, indicates a frame which is preferably of metal and of a form substantially as shown, comprising a plate at, having a marginal flange or wall I), and an opening 0, surrounded by a flange d. This frame may be of any suitable configuration in outline; the one here shown having a straight base, and an upwardly curved portion rising therefrom, and it is provided at its upper edge with a catch 6. This frame or plate is secured to the mouth of the sack of the purse at one side, and a plate or frame 0, is secured at the mouth to the opposite side. The plate C, is also provided with a catch as shown, and when both of these catches are brought together, the mouth of the purse will be closed and secured. The frame 0, is hinged as shown at f, to the base of the plate or frame A, and permits the purse to be opened when it is desired to remove the contents.
D, indicates a plate which is designed to close the opening in the plate A. This plate D, is arranged on the inner side of said opening in the plate A, and is limited in its forward movement by means of a flange d, of said plate A. Secured to the inner side of the plate D, is a fiat spring E, which has its free ends bearing against the plate or portion a,
so as to keep the plate D, normally advanced and closing the opening in the plate A. The frame A, is furthermore provided near its face and on its inner side with two studs g, which are designed to support the spring backed plate D, and the plate a, of said frame A, is provided with slots or apertures h, to receive an inwardly directed flange or lug t, at the lower end of the plate D, as better shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings.
\Vhen it is desired to place a coin in the purse, it is simply necessary to insert such coin into the opening 0, of the plate A, and then pressing said coin so as to push the plate D, inwardly, the coin will be allowed to drop into the purse. When pressure has been removed from said plate, it will simply advance to its normal position and close said opening. To remove coins from the purse it is necessary to unfasten the catch a and open the plate 0, from the plate A, when the coins may be removed in the usual manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. The combination with apurse; of a frame A, connected thereto and comprising a body plate a, a marginal flange or wall I), extending outwardly from said plate and having an opening for the passage of coins into the purse, and a flange (1, extending inwardly from said flange b, so as to form an opening 0, and a spring actuated plate arranged between the walla, and flange d, and adapted to normally close the opening 0; the said spring actuated plate being adapted to move toward and from the flange at, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with the purse, of the plate A, having the coin aperture 0, and the flange d, and also having the studs 6, the plate a, and the flaps h, the plate 0, hinged to the mouth of the purse, and arranged on the op posite side of the plate or frame, the plate D,
arranged on the inner side of the coin receiving aperture, and the spring E, secured to this latter plate and bearing against the plate A, all adapted to operate, substantially as specified.
WILL J WORDEN.
