' `-UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
JAY REED, OF BUTLER, MISSOURI.
HARNESS-STRAP ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,449, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed March 17,1893- Serial No. 466,427. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAY REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Strap Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a strap with buckle and loop attachments which is adapted for use in all classes of harness and especially the hames of horsecollars, and consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a longitudinal section of a harness strap provided with the attachments which constitute my invention. Fig. 2 represents a detail view in .perspective of the plate with loops, one of which is shown as detached; Fig. 3 a similar View of the bearing plate with loop and T headed button; Fig. 4 a perspective view of the bearing plate, showing a modiiication thereof.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a harness strap adapted for attachment to the ends of a hame as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, although such strap may be used for other purposes Where it would be found of value. To one end of the strap is connected a `suitable buckle B and between the folds of the strap is located a brace-plate C connected thereto by a rivet a which passes through the folds of the strap and through a hole l) in the plate. The brace-plate is constructed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal bent upon itself to form eyes for the attachment thereto of one or more loops, as shown'in Fig. 2. The hole in the plate is somewhat larger in dialneter than the diameter of the rivet to admit of the use of the common riveting machine in fastening it to the strap. The brace-plate C which braces and strengthens the end of the strap, has one or more loops D connected thereto in any suitable manner. These loops 5o may be constructed of wire and afterward connected to the ends of the plate by bending the sheet metal thereof around the split portion of the loops and the metal pressed tightlyT against it to prevent the split from spreading.
If preferred the plate may be cast or other- Wise formed integral with the loops so that they will be rigid, and one or more loops may be used as found desirable when applied to small or large collars.
A suitable hooked bearing plate E is pro- 6o vided to take the Wear ed the leather strap and at the same time to form abrace therefor, and is preferably constructed from a single thickness of sheet metal and may be used with or Wit-hout the loop F as found desirable,
the loop being connected to the plate as shown in Fig. 3, or formed rigid with the plate by casting or otherwise. The hooked bearing plate E may be permanently attached to the strap by riveting or otherwise and at any de- 7o sirable distance from the buckle, or may be adjustable thereon as shown, so as to increase or diminish the distance between it and the buckle, as circumstances may require. There may be many ways inwhich the bearing plate can be rendered adjustable upon the strap, and in the present instance I have shown one whichI think might be used to advantage, and consists of a button c having a T-shaped head. This buttonis pivotally con- 8o nected to the plate E so as to turn on its axis to bring the head crosswise of one of the holes ol, thus holding the plate tothe strap, and when it is desired to disconnect the plate with the strap, the button is turned so as to and connected thereto, one or more loops engaging with the eyes of the braceA plate, and a hooked bearing-plate connected to the strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A haine-strap provided with a suitable buckle at one end, a brace-plate located be- I0 tween the folds of the strap and'eonnected hereunto subscribed my name in thepresenoe thereto and having one or more loops, and a` of two witnesses.
hookedv bearing plateadj ustably connected to the strap to increase for decrease the dis- J AY REED.
5 tance between it and the buokleorbraee-plate, Witnesses:
substantailyas and for the purpose described. T. J. WRIGHT,
In testimony that I claim che above I have H.v M. CANNON.
