Description

UN TED ST T S PAT NT OFFICE.
JOSHUA A. HADLEY, OF BRAZIL, INDIANA, ASS IeNoR or ONE-HALF TO RUFUS L. KENNEDY, or SAME PLACE.
FLUE-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,307, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed May 6,1893.
Serialll'o. 4731256. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA A. HADLEY, a; citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Stops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying 1drawings, which form a part of this specificaion.
My invention relates to improvements in flue stops or devices for closing the stove pipe holes in chimneys when the pipes are removed and to fasteners for securing the same in place.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a chimney showing my improved flue stop in position and held in place by means of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener detached. l 1
The reference numeral 1 designates the flue stop consisting of a short section of stove pipe of the right diameter to fit the flue, cut away at its front orinner end, as seen at 3, and.
provided with a cap 4., at its outer end, having a knob 5. This flue stop is intended to be inserted in the fine or stove pipe opening of a chimney, when the said pipe is removed therefrom, as in warm weather when the stove is'not in use. By reason of the cut away inner end of the stop, any soot or dirt falling down the chimney will be caught in the stop and is removed with the stop when the is withdrawn from the opening.
The numeral 6 designates the fastener consisting of a spring metal plate having one end bent at a slight angle and formed with'an aperture for the passage of a screw bolt -7, also passing through an aperture in the pipe and provided with a nut 8, for securing it in place. As will be seen in Fig. 1 the free end of this plate projects away from the pipe some distance and is bent outwardly at a right angle forming a lug 9 and again at a right angle forming a lug 10.
The operation will be readily understood: The stop or pipe is inserted in the flue opening and will be held securely therein by frictional contact of the fastener with the wall of said opening. The lug '9 acts as a stop for the pipe by engaging with the outer edge of said opening so as to prevent the pipe from being pushed too far in the opening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with aflue stop consisting latter of a short section of pipe cut away on a beveled line at its inner end forming a scoop and provided with ,a cap having a knob, of the fastener consisting of the spring plate secured to one edge of said pipe and its other end bent outwardly at a right angle forming a stop limiting the movement of the pipe in a fine opening, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSHUA A. HADLEY.
