" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON B. BROWN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WASHSTAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,295, dated November 21, 189 3.
Application filed January 28,1893. Serial No.45 .991. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRISON B, BROWN, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing the cover raised, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the stand and cover in section, and the cover in its elevated position in dotted lines.
The object of this invention is to provide a wash stand adapted for office as well as domestic use, and to this end, I have devised and constructed the stand hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes a stand of any suitable form or design, having in its top a basin B provided with an outlet 0. One side of the stand is provided with one or more doors D to compartments, the upper of which is adapted to hold a receptacle arranged beneath the outlet 0 of the basin and thus catch and hold waste water.
Thus far described, the stand does not materially differ from the ordinary wash stand in common use.
On top of the stand and back of the basin I support a pitcher E by brackets F. The pitcher, at opposite ends, is provided with trunnions G resting in elongated bearings H of the bracket F. The object of the elongated bearings H is to admit of a rolling action of the pitcher when being tilt-ed, and thus move the pitcher forward so that the water will be directed into the basin, and when released, automatically roll back from the basin and be out of the way of a person using it.
The stand is covered by a lid I, the top of which may be. slightly inclined back to the cylindrical or other suitably shaped rear portion K. The forward end of this cover rests on the stand and the back or rear portion is supported by transverse armsL of the brackets F. These arms may be braced by legs M if additional rigidityis desired. In the drawings I have shown the outer end of the arms L entering the sides of the cover at the center of the enlarged or rear portion K, and
thus serving as pivots upon which the cover is tilted or turned up to allow access to the pitcher and basin. In order to counter-balance the cover I attach weights N to the inside thereof, back of the brackets. The stop or cross-piece 0 may, however, be of such Weight as torender the weights N unnecessary. It will be seen that the circular or enlarged portion of the cover is designed'to in-' its trunnions, and the elongated bearings of the brackets. This action moves the pitcher forward so that water can be poured into the basin. The pitcher is then released, and by reason of the over weight'of its under side and water remaining therein, it in righting itself, rolls back to its normal position at the rear of the elongated bearing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the body ofa wash stand, of a lid pivoted to brackets secured to the top of the stand, said lid being provided with inclined and rounded side pieces, a low front portion, and a rounded arch shaped rear portion secured to said side pieces to receive a pitcher, both of said portions being formed of rigid material and united to sides common to both, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the body of a wash stand, of a lid pivoted to brackets secured to the top of the stand, said lid being provided with inclined and rounded side pieces, alow inclined front portion, and a rounded arched rear portion secured to saidside pieces. to receive a pitcher, both of said portions being formed of rigid material, and a weighted cross-bar secured to the rear bottom end of the arched rear portion of the lid and abutting against the said brackets to arrest the portion secured to said side pieces and pro- IO backward movement of the lid when the latvided with a weighted cross-bar which abuts ter is raised, substantially as described. against said brackets When the lid is raised 3. The combination with the body of a Wash and limits the backward movement of said 5 stand, of brackets secured to its top to pivotlid, substantially as described.
ally support a pitcher, of a lid pivotally se- HARRISON B. BROWN. cured to branch arms of said brackets, and Witnesses: having inclined and rounded side pieces, a ARTHUR GARNER, low front portion and a rounded arched rear EDWARD C. TUCKER.
