UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
NATHAN O. BOND, OF FAIRFAX COURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
PORTABLE WASH-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,186, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed November 9, 1838- Serial No. 290,342. (No model.)
Be it known that I, NATHAN O. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfax Court-House, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable VVash- Stands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to portable washstands which have a folding cover and a selfdumping bowl, and has for its object to increase the usefulness of this class of devices and render the parts more accessible for cleaning, repairing, or for any purpose whatever.
The wash-bowl is so connected with the cover that when the latter is open the washbowl will be in position for use, and when closed the wash-bowl will be tilted so as to dump its contents into a splash-bowl, which is mounted 011 a drawer having a front and two sides. The slop-pail is arranged beneath the splash-bowl, and is removable through a door in the front of the cabinet.
The improvement consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which is shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention, showing the cover thrown up. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the splash-bowl and drawer drawn out by dotted lines Fig. 3, a vertical section on the line mm of Fig. 1; Fig. 4:, aside view in detail of the upper portion; Fig. 5, a detail view of the socket and rod; Fig. 6, a top plan view of the wash-bowl and its supporting-rod, and Fig. 7 a side view of the wash-bowl.
The cabinet A, of any desired pattern and form, is provided with the feet a, which are arranged at the corners of the cabinet and extend up along said corners to near the top of the cabinet. The door B in one side of the cabinet, preferably its front, admits of the removal of the slop-pail O, that is placed on the shelf or bottom I) of the cabinet. The drawer or slide D is composed of three sides--the front d and the two sides d. The sides are preferably strips which are suitably braced to strengthen them. The splash-bowl E is supported on and secured to the edges of the three sides of the drawer, and has an opening in its bottom to permit the water to escape to the slop-pail. The wash-bowl F is supported at its rear side on the rod G, which passes through the extension f of the wash-bowl, said extension having an angular opening to correspond with the rod in cross-section, so that the rod and the bowl will turn together. The rod G is fitted at its ends in the sockets H, that are journaled in the sides g g of the cabinet, and are held in said sockets by the set-screws h.. The arms h, integral with the sockets, are connected with the cover J,which cover is hinged at its rear edge and adapted to close the top of the cabinet and hide the wash-bowl from view by the links .I, which have a pivotal connection with the said cover. The arms h and the links I are of such relative lengths and are so disposed that when the cover is open the wash-bowl is in a horizontal position, and when closed the washbowl is tilted to discharge its contents into the splash-bowl. The cover when up formsa splash-board, and also serves as a counter-balance for the wash-bowl and as a convenient means for operating the same. To use the wash-stand, throw up the cover J. This brings the wash-bowl in the proper position. After using, the cover is turned down, and, through the hereinbefore-described connections G, h, and I, tilts the wash-bowl and dumps its contents into the splash-bowl, whence it escapes to the slop-pail, which is removed from time to time and emptied.
The rear portion of the cabinet is extended up above the cover a short distance, and is made hollow to receive the water-tank N, which is arranged therein. The faucet 0, arranged to supply water to the wash-bowl, is connected with the tank by a suitable pipe It will be observed that the splash-bowl not only prevents the water from splashing against the sides of the cabinet, but also v IOO To facilitate the insertion and the removal of the splash-bowl, as when drawing the same in and out, its edge is cut away at its rear, as shown at m, to give clearance for the washbowl.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the wash-bmvl having a side extension provided with a rectangular opening, the rod fitted in the opening of said extension, the sockets fitted to the ends of the rod and forming journals therefor, and having arms, the set-screws for holding the sockets on the rod, the cover, and the links connecting the said arms with the said cover, substantially as set forth, for the purposes described.
2. In a wash-stand, the combination, with the cabinet and the tilting wash-bowl, of the drawer or slide, and the combined splash. and guide bowl supported by said drawer or slide having a discharge-opening in its bottom, and having the upper portion of its rear edge cut away to give clearance for the said washbowl when drawing the said slide out, substantially as set forth.
3. A portable cabinet wash-stand consisting of a frame or casing having a portion, adapted to contain a slop-pail, apivoteil rocking bowl and tilting mechanism therefor secured to its top, and a drawer and splashbowl supported thereby, said drawer being arranged to slide in and out of the case between the slop-pail and bowl, substantially as described.
4:. The herein described portable cabinet wash-stand, composed of the frame or casing having a bottom to support the slop-pail, a door to admit access to the interior of the cabinet, the drawer or slide, the splash-bowl. supported by the said drawer and having a dis charge-opening, the water-tank, the washbowl, the rod connected with the wash-bowl the sockets fitted to the ends of: the rods and forming journals for the same, and having arms, the cover, and the link connecting the said arms with the said cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
