To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, JAooB RIBAYsnN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented'new and useful Improvementsiri Portable Toilets, of which the following is a full, clearconcise, and
exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of provide means for automatically effecting a' close connection between the bowl ofthe device and the receptacle thereof, when the latter is properly positioned under said bowl,
by closing a door through which said receptacle is introduced to a compartment provided therefor.
A further object is to provide an operative connection between a hinged cover of the device and a water pump employed therein, so that flushing of the bowl will occur when said cover is closed, and also to provide means for deflecting the incoming water so as to distribute the same over the interior surface of the bowl. And a further object is to provide means for water-sealing said receptacle.
Other objects will appear. hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which j Figure 1 is a top plan View of my device with a portion broken away. Fig. 2 is a sec tional view along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the operating parts of the pump employed in the device; Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 3, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 and showing a valve employed in the receptacle of the device; and Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation showing a removable plate for permitting access to the toilet-paper holder arranged in the receptacle compartment.
The preferred form of construction as shown in the drawings comprises a rectan ular casing having a front wall 1, side walls 2 and 3 and a rear wall 4, there being a front door 5 whichswings downwardly on hinges 6 secured to the front edges of the bottom 7 of the device, as shown in Fig. 2. A removable top'member 8 is supported at the upper edges of the side walls by means of rabbe'ts 9 formed therein, said edges being flush with the top surface of the member 8 in order to produce a neat appearance when the cover 10 is swung downwardly on hinges 11 into closedposition. Said cover 10 is maintained in theverticalopen position by means of a stop 12 secured to the rear wall 4, as shown in Fig. 2. A snap-lock 13 and stops 14 are provided for the door 5 which serve to hold the same rigidly in closed po sition as shown.
A removable circular lid 15 having a handle 16 is provided for the member 8, and arranged below said lid is a bowl 17 rigidly supported by means of brackets 18 project lng forwardly from the front side of a water reservoir 19, there being a depending apron 20 surrounding said bowl and secured to the upper edge thereof to which said brackets are soldered, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and-2. A receptacle 21 arranged directly below the discharge opening 22 of the bowl 17 is removably-mounted in a compartment 23 of the device and is provided with a water pocket 24 extending around the upper edge thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. A
cover 25 for the receptacle 21 is provided with a depending flange 26, the lower edge of which is submerged in water supplied to the'pocket 24, thus forming a water seal. In order to facilitate the introduction of water to the pocket 24, a funnel 27 is sol- 'dered to the exterior wall 28' thereof, perforations 29 being formed in the wall 28 to establish communication between said funnel and pocket.
The cover 25 is provided with a central opening 30 which is somewhat larger than the discharge opening 22 and arranged directly thereunder, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. A downwardly bent circular flange 31 constitutes the wall of the opening 30 which from saidreceptacle. In order to facilitate 25, further escape would result.
is normally closed by a gravity controlled cup-shaped valve 32, the lower edge of the flange 31 contacting with the upper surface of said valve inside the peripheral wall 33 thereof. In this manner an annular chamber is formed around the flange 31 which traps sufficient water when the bowl is flushed to produce a water-seal. The valve 32 is mounted on one extremity of a lever 34 fulcrumed at the lower extremity of a bracket 35 depending from the lower side of the cover 25, the other extremity of said lever having a counter-balance weight 36 which serves to normally maintain the valve 32 in the elevated or closed position. The arrangement is such that the valve 32 is free to rock downwardly to permit of admission to the receptacle 2'1, but will be immediately rocked to closing position by the weight 36 so as to prevent the escape of any stench the removal and handling of the receptacle 21, the same is provided at the front side thereof with a handle 37 and a bail 38, this latter being pivoted toopposite sides of said receptacle at points 39.

The platform 40 comprises a pair of longitudinal strips 41 hinged at their forward ends to a hinge rod 42 having eyes 43 at the ends thereof which are'secured by means of rivets 44 to the door 5 adjacent the lower edge thereof, as
shown in Fig. 2. The rear ends of strips 41 are inclined downwardly and forwardly and are'supported by ways 42 which have a similar inclination. The ways 42 are arranged in openings 43 formed in the bottom 7 as shown in Fig. 4. Transverse strips 44 are secured to strips 41, thus forming a rigid platform. The arrangement is such that when the door 5 is opened platform 40 and receptacle 21 will be lowered, thus breaking the connection of the apron 20 with the cover 25 and making sufficient clearance for the ready'withdrawal of the receptacle 21.

17 is effected by means of. a pump com prising a vertical cylinder 45 located in said reservoir and provided with inlet open- I ings 46 at the lower end thereof. Above the openings 46 a partition 47 having a central opening 48 is provided in the cylinder 45, there being a valve 49 which normally closes the opening 48. Extending upward from the cylinder 45 at a point directly above partition 47 is a pipe 50 which is provided with a ball valve 51 normally closing an opening 52 located at the lower end of said pipe. The upper end of the pipe 50 is passed through a bushing 53 secured in the bowl 17 and terminates in a baffle-plate or deflector 54, the function of which is to direct the incoming water to the sides of said bowl. A piston plunger 55 operating in the cylinder 45 comprises a stem 56 having a flange 57 intermediate the ends thereof. A plurality of felt washers 58 are firmly pressed against flange 57 by means of a washer 59 and nut 60 screwed on to the stem 56. In this manner a tight piston is formed, and when the same becomes worn a turn or two of the nut 60 will renew the tight fit. The stem 56 is pivoted at 61 to a reservoir. 19 into the cylinder 45, valve 49 being open and the valve 51 closed. A downstroke of the piston caused by closing the cover 10 closes the valve 49 and opens the valve 51 and effects a discharge of. water into the bowl 17. With this arrangement then it will be seen that in use, upon raising of the cover 10 the device will be automatically set in condition for flushing and, upon lowering of said cover, the flushing will be automatically effected. The reservoir 19 may be readily filled with water after removing the filler-cap 65, and in or der to ascertain the quantity of water in said reservoir a sight glass 66 set in a frame 67 is provided in the member 8 as shown in Fig. 1. A float 68 suspended on a rod 69 pivoted to a lever 70 which is fulcrumed at 71 and provided with a dial 72 indicates that the reservoir needs filling. And a float 73 carried by a lever 74 which is fulcrumed at 75 and provided with a dial 76 indicates that the reservoir is full of water, as indicated by dotted line 76.
A toilet-paper receptacle 77 is secured to the inner side of the wall 3 and in order to provide access thereto a removable plate 78 1s arranged in said wall as shown in Fig. 5. The plate 78 is of less width than the open ing 79 in which the same is inserted, the remaining opening being of sufficient width to permit of the ready withdrawal of toilet paper 80. Each end of the plate 7 8 is provided with projecting pins 81 which are adapted to enter arcuate slots 82 provided therefor in the wall 3. Pins 81 when resting in the slots 82 abut a flange 83 of the receptacle 77, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to facilitate the removal of the plate 78, a
notch 84 is formed at the lower edge of the opening 7 9 as shown in Fig. 5. A slight upward pressure on the plate 78 effects the removal thereof in case a new roll of paper is to be placed in the receptacle 77.
While 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron surrounding said bowl and depending from the edge thereof, a removable receptacle located under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle, a door in said casing permitting the introduction of said receptacle into said casing, and means cooperating with said door for elevating said receptacle so as to connect the cover thereof with the lower edge of said apron.
2. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular casing having side walls, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron depending from the upper edge of said bowl, a removable receptacle placed under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle contacting the lower edge of said apron, a hinged door in one of said side walls permitting the introduction of said receptacle to the interior of said casing, and means connected with said door for breaking the contact of said cover with said apron.
8. A device of the class described comprising a casing having side walls, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron fitted to said bowl and surrounding the same, a re ceptacle under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle adapted to connect with the lower edge of said apron, a door hinged to one of said side walls, and means hinged to said door for supporting said receptacle.
4. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron surrounding said bowl and depending therefrom, a removable receptacle, a cover for said receptacle adapted to con nect with the lower edge of said apron, a door hinged to said casing on a horizontal axis, a platform supporting said receptacle hinged to said door, means for maintaining said platform in a horizontal plane, the construction being such that when said door is closed said platform is elevated to effect the connection of said cover with said apron and that when said door is opened said connection is broken.
5. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bowl supported in said casing having a. central discharge opening, an apron surrounding said bowl, a removable receptacle in said casing located under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle, a gravity valve in said cover below said discharge opening, means for sealing said cover and said valve, a door in said casing hinged on a horizontal axis adjacent the bottom of said casing, a platform hinged to said door on an axis parallel to the door hinge, and inclined ways provided for said platform at the edge thereof opposite the hinge connection with said door, said door being adapted to elevate and lower one edge of said platform, and said ways being adapted to effect a similar movement to the other edge of said platform, said receptacle being supported by said platform and the cover thereof being adapted to connect with said apron when said platform is elevated.
6. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bowl supported in said casing and provided with a central discharge opening, an apron surrounding said bowl and depending from the upper edge thereof to a plane slightly above the plane of said discharge opening, a removable receptacle located under said bowl, a water pocket extending around the upper edge of said receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a flange extending into said pocket, the central portion of said cover being depressed and provided with an opening, a gravity valve adapted to normally close said last named opening, said cover being adapted to connect with the lower edge of said apron, a hinged door in said casing permitting the introduction of said receptacle, a platform supporting said receptacle hinged to said door, and means for maintaining said platform in a horizontal position, said door when opened and closed being adapted to lower and elevate said platform respectively.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, a bowl supported insaid casing, an apron surrounding said bowl and depending from the edge thereof, a removable receptacle located under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle, means for permitting the introduction of said receptacle into said casing, and means for elevating said receptacle so as to connect the cover thereof with the lower edge of said apron.

A device of the class described comprising a rectangular casing having side mitting the introduction of said receptacle to the interior of said casing, and means for breaking the contact of said cover with said ap n- -9. A device of the class described comprising a casing having side walls, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron fitted to said bowl and surrounding the same, a receptacle under said bowl, a cover for said receptacle adapted to connect with the lower edge of said apron, and means for supporting said receptacle.
10. A device of the class described comprising acasing, a bowl supported in said casing, an apron surrounding said bowl and dependingtherefrom, a removable receptacle, a cover for said receptacle adapted to connect with the lower edge of said apron, a door hinged to said casing on a horizontal axis, supporting means for said receptacle hinged to said door, means for maintaining said supporting means in a horizontal plane, the construction being such that when said door is closed said supporting means is elevated to eifect the connection of said cover with said apron and that when said door is opened said connection is broken.
