DISINFEOTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEoDoR DRUznAorr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Hoboken, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Disinfecting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention is an improvement in disinfecting appliances for water closets and has in view an attachment for the under side of the seatlid which will automatically discharge a measured quantity of a liquid disinfectant into the bowl each time the lid is closed, the disinfectant being preferably first discharged into an absorbent body from which it drips into the bowl, thus extending the disinfection over a longer period.

The invention further contemplates a suitable device such as a cap mounted to move automatically over the absorbent body when the lid is raised so that the drippings from the said body will not fall on the seat or get on the clothing.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved attachment as applied to a water closet, the lid and seat of which are also shown in section and the bowl partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a face view of the attachment with the lid raised, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the attachment and the lid when they are in the position shown in Fig. 2.

For the purpose of illustrating the application of my improved disinfecting appliance and making the mode of operation clear, I have shown the bowl 5 of a water closet having the usual seat 6 and the lid 7, the latter being hinged to swing to and from closed position in the customary way. To the under side of the seat 1 apply my attachment the same embodying in its construction a tank 8 for a liquid disinfect-ant having ears 9 extended from the top for securing it to the lid with screws or other suitable devices and provided at its forward end with a filling plug 10. The tank is further provided with a receptacle 11 disposed approximately centrally on its under side, the receptacle having a removable cover 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with perforations. Within the receptacle is placed an absorbent body 13 such as a sponge, and into this body extends the discharge arm of. a measuring tube 1% the opposite and inlet arm of the tube extending from the discharge arm at the top of the tank forwardly to a point along the bottom of the tank, the entire tube presenting a form in the shape of a hook.

A cap 15 is of a size to freely pass over the receptacle 11 and is hinged at its forward side to the tank so as to hang open as shown in Fig. 1 when the lid of the closet is closed, and to automatically swing closed when the lid is swung open.

In the operation of the appliance, the tank is filled through the filling plug with any suitable liquid. disinfectant until the level of the disinfectant stands at or near the under side of the most elevated portion of the measuring tube when the tank is in a horizontal position as when the lid of the closet is closed. With the lid in this position, the disinfectant passes into the inlet arm of the measuring tube to the level of the disinfectant in the tank. When the lid is raised as when the closet is used, the disinfectant in the inlet arm of the measuring tube flows into the outlet arm of the tube and stands just below the level at which it would run into the absorbent body, the inlet arm of the tube at this time standing above the free surface of the liquid as shown in Fig. 3. During this movement of the lid the cap 15 drops over the receptacle containing the absorbent body and prevents the latter from dripping on the seat or the disinfectant from getting on the clothing. hen the lid of the water closet is returned to closed position the cap 15 swings open out of the range of the perforated receptacle and the disinfectant in the discharge arm of the tube flows into the absorbent body from which it afterward drips into the bowl.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination in a disinfectant attachment for water closets, of a disinfectant tank, an absorbent body carried to the outside of the tank, means to deliver a quantity of the disinfectant from the tank to the ab sol-bent body by returning the tank from an uprightposition, and a cap arranged to move over the absorbent body when the tank is turned upright.

2. The combination of a Water closet lid a disinfectant tank attached to the under side of the lid, an absorbent body carried by the tank, a measuring tube arranged to deliver a quantity of disinfectant from the tank to the absorbent body by the opening and closing of the lid and a cap hinged to the tank to swing over the body when the lid is open and swing from the body when the lid is closed.
