UNITED` STATES FRANCES HIGBIE, OF BROOKLYN,r NEW YORK.
CLAMP-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,222, dated November 21, 1893.
' Application filed March 22, 1893.V Serial No. 467,170. (No model.)
To all whom it' may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCES HIGBIE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamp-Joints, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in adjustable shelf or bracket supports, and consists in the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 'l is a side elevation of the device in which the features of the invention are incorporated. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the base, and a partial side elevation of the support connected with the base.
I employ a vertical standard, or support, A, in the form of a cylindrical rod. A bracket, B, is applied. to this standard, and adapted for adjustment thereon. The standard or support A must of necessity be provided with a base. In the drawings the base is designated as C, and is shown as made in somewhat of a horse-shoe pattern. At the rear of the base a body or neck 14 is located, which extends downward and horizontally outward therefrom. This neck is provided with an opening 15, corresponding in every particular to the shape of the opening 11 in the neck of the bracket, but in order that the support or standard shall not be drawn from the base when the bracket is manipulated, the standard or support is provided preferably with a recess 16 in one of its faces, which receives a lug or lip 17, formed at the lower contact point of the neck, as is best shown in Fig. 3
In addition to the lip 17 and the recess in the support or standard A, an additional fastening device is employed, connecting the support or standard with the base, and ordinarily this fastening device comprises a clamping arm 18, which is provided with an opening fitted practically to the shape of the standard or support, through which the latter passes, and a head 19, which head stands at an angle to the bodyas shownin Fig. 2, and is adapted for engagement with the inner wall of the base, or with a recess in the base if the said base is solid.
In Fig. l I have illustrated the base as fitted to receive a lamp, and/,the bracket as being adapted to receive a cooking utensil, the bracket being provided with an opening through which the heat from the lamp may ascend to impinge upon the vessel; but the invention may be applied to many objects, in fact, to any object that is to be horizontally supported and adjusted upon a vertical or approximately vertical support.
Having thus described my invention, I
,claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having an opening produced therein the walls of which are inclined in essentially opposite directions, one wall being provided with a lug, of a support or standard passing through the said opening and provided with a recess receiving thelug of the base, and a clamp engaging with the standard or support and having locking engagement with the base, substantially as shown and described, whereby'the support in addition to engagement witha fulcrumv and a leverage point on the base is held in locking engagement therewith, as and for the purpose set forth.
FRANCES I-IIGBIE.
