COMBINED BARREL TRUCK AND'STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,097, dated November 7, 1893.

Beit known that I, J ULIUs FILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, 1n the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented a neW and useful Combined Barrel Truck and Stand, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements lin that class of inventions employed for moving and supporting barrels, the object in view being to construct a strong, durable, and convenient truck, which may be readily drawn from one part of a store or Warehouse to another, upon or from which a barrel may be readily mounted or dismounted; which is adapted to be adjusted tov secure barrels of dierent sizes, and to present the same for dispensing their contents either fromspigots located in the heads of the barrels or in the sides thereof, or, in other Words, adapted to support the barrels either in a vertical or. a horizontal position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists incertain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the draWings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel-truck and stand Fig. 2 is a similar view, the barrel being shown in an elevated position as when being placed upon the truck or When in position for dispensing from a spigot or faucet located in the side. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the combined stand and truck.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I employ a lower main or base frame, constructing the same of a pair of opposite heavy side-bars 1, and a pair of transverse connecting end bars 2,' the whole forming an oblong frame. The bars 1 and 2 are suitably connected at their ends, the latter bars beingpreferablylet into the former. Corner-blocks 3 are located at the corners of the frame upon the inside thereof and are securely bolted in position, thus lending rigidity. Secured to theopposite side barsl at the inner sides thereof, and in this instance having their rear ends let into recesses formed in the rear corner-blocks, is a pair of hori-v zontal cleats or restbars 4, which cleats or rest-bars terminate some distance short of the front end-bar 2. The side-bars 1 and the frontend bar 2 have their upper sides cut away, the former for a portion of their length at their front ends, so that they are about upon a horizontal plane with the upper sides of the cleats 4. The side-bars are further provided adjacent to the ends of the cleats 4 with transversely opposite bolt-holes 5, into any pair of which is passed a transverse removable rod or pin 6. Suitable casters 7 are let into the corner-blocks of the frame,where by the structure is transportable, and for the purpose of convenience a pair of eyes 8 islocated in the rear cross-bar 2 and is designed to be engaged by the hook-shaped terminals 9 of a draftbail 10, which is loosely connected to a draft-tongue 1l. comprises a pairof opposite side bars 12, which are of a length slightly greater than the cleats 4, and rest upon and extend beyond the same, being loosely embraced by the bars 1. The rear ends of the bars 12 are at their lower corners cut away so as to overlap the rear crossbar 2, and the front ends of the bars 12 are provided With longitudinal slots or Ways 13. The lower bifurcations of these bars, as formed by the slots 13, have pairs of transversely opposite perforations 14, and through any pair of these passes the cylindrical rod 6. The rear ends of the bars 12 are connected by a curved rest-bar 15, and said rest-bar has secured thereto hook-shaped metal plates 16, which are designed to engage with the chine of a .barrel 17. A rest-bar 1S connects the bars 12 immediately in rear of the slots 13, and is designed to support the middle or bodyportion of the barrel. In the slots 13 take the reduced ends 19 of a movable curved rest-bar 20, which rest-bar is provided with a perforation through Which passes alongitudinally-disposedrod 21,Whose rear end projects through a perforation 22 formed `in the rear rest-bar, and beyond the same has a head 23. The front end of the rod is threaded, and a tailnut 24 is mounted thereon, so that by rotating the tail-nut the rest-bar may be adjusted back and forth in its slots or Ways 13, and hence the stand is adapted for the reception and accommodation of barrels of different lengths. The movable rest-bar is further provided with a pair of hook-shaped plates 26,
The stand or barrel-support IOO which extend above the upper edge of the bar, and are designed to coact with the plates heretofore mentioned for engaging the chines of the barrel.
This completes the construction, and the operation is as follows: In order to transport the barrel to any position in a store-liouse or store, the hail has its hook ends engaged with the eyes, whereupon the desired transportation may be accomplished. After the truck has reached the position, the hooks may be disengaged from the eyes and the tongue set to one side. In mountingabarrelin position the stand-frame is raised to a vertical position, and the barrel tilted so that its bottom chine engages with the lower barrel-engaging hooks, after which the stand is lowered to position upon the rest-bars or cleats, and said barrel moved back until its rear chine is engaged by the rearchine-engaginghooks,after which the tail-nut upon the cylindrical threaded rod is rotated, so as to feed the front rest-bar toward the barrel, whereby its plates are caused to engage the remaining chine of the barrel, and the latter is thus clamped securely in position, as will be obvious. If it be desired to employ a side spigot or faucet, it is of course necessary to elevate the stand and the barrel to a vertical position, and when in such position the barrel will rest partly upon the chineembracing hooks, and at its outer side upon the front cross bar 2. If, however, it is desired to employ an end faucet, the barrel is of course lowered to a horizontal position.
For the purpose of facilitating this raising and lowering of the stand, the side bars 12 thereof are preferably provided with suitable hand-loops 28.
It is to be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a barrel-stand, the combination with opposite supporting side bars provided at corresponding ends with ways, and at their opposite ends with a transverse stationary restbar, of a movable rest-bar mounted in the ways, chine-engaging plates extending from both bars, perforations formed in the restbars, a threaded shaft mounted in the perforations and provided with a head at one end, and a nut mounted on the opposite end of said shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the lower rectangular truck-frame provided at its opposite sides with horizontal cleats extending a portion of their length, and beyond the ends of said cleats with transverse perforations, of a superimposed rectangular barrel-supporting frame mounted upon the cleats and projecting beyond said cleats and provided with perforations aligning with those of the lower frame, and a transverse pivoting-rod passed through the perforations of the two frames, substantially as specified. 3. The combination with the rectangular truck-frame, of a superimposed rectangular barrel-supporting frame, one end bar of which is adjustable, a rod passing through the adjustable end of the supporting-frame, and means arranged in the truck-frame for supporting the supporting-frame, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with the lower rectangular frame having the front cut away portion,and the internal horizontal cleats, of the superimposed stand-frame consisting of the opposite side bars slotted and pivoted to the lower frame, and at their rear ends overlapping the end bar thereof and resting on thc cleats, the rear curved rest-bar having chineenibracing hooks, the movable rest-bar having chine-embracing cleats and reduced at its ends to engage the slots, and means for seicuring and adjusting said movable rest-bar,
substantially as specified.
