SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,813, dated October 31, 1893.

Application filed October 5, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNST HARTSTEIN, doctor of medicine, of Goppingen, in the Kingdom of Wiirtemberg and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oannulas for Tracheotomy, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to apparatus for use in tracheotomy, and consists of improvements in the tubes whereby air is admitted to the hinge when the throat is closed by croup, diphtheria or other cause; its principal object being to enable the inner or the outer tube, either independently of the other, to be changed with safety and ease.

In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front view of the plate for supporting the two tubes. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the tubes attached to the plate. Fig. 3 is a side view of the outer tube and its appurtenances. Fig. 4 is a corresponding front view. Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of the inner tube.

A, is a plate curved to the shape of the neck, and intended to be placed in position over the incision next the skin. In the center of the plate is a hole as, and on the outer or convex side are two small hooks and eyes I) which are employed for fastening the tubes B and C, after insertion in the throat, to the plate A. The tubes B and O are curved; the tube 0 being made to slide into the tube B. The latter is furnished at its top or outer end with a guard B provided, first, with two wire loops g whereby the tube may be removed from the throat; secondly, with a revolving catch 0 on the left hand side for keeping the tube 0 in position when placed inside the tube B, and, thirdly, with small arms f, one on each-side, for enabling the hooks b and the plate A to hold the tube fast to the plate. The inner tube 0 is also fitted with a similar guard 0 connected to the tube by a tongue n and provided with two wire loops, g, a catch d on the right hand side for preventing the tube 0 slipping down the tube B, and arms f. The tube B is formed with a slot i running along its lower side. When Serial No. 447,933. (No model.)

removing the tube B, the slot 2' slides over the tongue 42; the one tube thus helping to guide the other.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The herein described cannula comprising two tubes fitting one within the other, the outer one being capable of an outward movement independently of the inner tube, and means, located at the outer ends of the tubes, for holding the latter in position, substantially as described.

2. The herein described cannula comprising two tubes fitting one within the other, the outer one being capable of an outward movement independently of the inner tube, and radiating plates located at the outer ends of the tubes and adapted to abut edge to edge, substantially as described.

3. The herein described cannula comprising two tubes fitting one within the other, the outer one being capable of an outward movement independently of the inner tube, plates secured to the outer ends of the tubes, a separate plate and means for independently fastoning each of the tube plates thereto, substantially as described.

4. The herein described cannula, comprising two tubes fitting one within the other, the outer one being slotted, a separate plate and means for independently fastening each of the tubes thereto, and a neck or web connected with the fastening means of the inner tube and extending through the slot of the outer tube, substantially as described.

5. The herein described cannula, comprising two tubes, fitting one within an other, the inner one having a plate held thereto by a short neck or web, and the outer one being slotted to slip over the inner one and pass each side of said web, and means for detachably fastening the tubes together so that each of them may be independently removed and inserted, substantially as described.

6. The herein described cannula, comprising two tubes fitting one within the other, and formed with plates, the plates having lateral projections, and a separate plate having hooks for engaging said projections to detachably connect the separate plate to the plates 10 outer tube, a revoluble catch secured to the plate of the outer tube to hold the inner tube in position, a separate plate and means for detachably securing each of the tube plates thereto, substantially as described.
