w. M. TAYLOR. I
PLOW. No. 507,509. PatentdOct. 24,1893.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. TAYLOR, OF ROCK MILLS, ALABAMA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,509, dated October 24, 1893.
Application filed August 14, 1893. Serial No. 483,123. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM'M. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rock Mills, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have made'certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to plows having particular reference to that class of such devices as are known as shovel-plows; the object of the invention being to improve the attachment of the shares to the standard in such a manner as to make them adjustable easily and quickly, and also easily removable; to provide for the use of the entire blade or of a short piece thereof; and to remove the heel-bolt from contact with the ground, the details of construction of all of which being hereinafter fully described.
The invention consists of the novel elements of the device hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower end of a standard showing the device thereon, holding a shovel at a medium point of extension, and also a scraper-blade, said scraper-blade being in vertical section through its central portion, and hence only one of the wings is shown. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, showing by broken lines thereon its lugs. Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the scraper-clamp-plate, and Fig. 5 is an edge view thereof.
In the figures, like reference marks indicate corresponding parts in all the view-5Q A is the standard or foot .of the plow, B is the shovel, C, the scraper-blade, D the heelbolt, and E the tail-nut thereof.
A plate F, Figs. 2 and 3, provided with a longitudinal slot f, and tapering lugs f and f is provided and is employed in clamping the shovel to the standard A, the heel-bolt D passing through the slotf therein and between the bars of the standard. It will be noticed that the lugsf and f rest between the said side-bars of the standard A, which prevents the slightest lateral movement of said plate. It will be also noticed that one of these lugs (f is shorter than the other. When the hole in the shovel B is above or below the block placed between the lower ends of the side pieces of the standard A, the lugf' will be inserted in said hole to cause the engagement between the plate F and the said shovel B, said lug projecting between the said side-bars when the hole is above the block therebetween, and when the said hole is below the said block the top side of said lug f will rest against the extreme lower end of the standard. In any case the shovel is held parallel to the said plate by the fit of the lug in the hole and the portion of the shovel around said lug is covered and compressed by the coincident portions of the plate F, actuated by the bolt D thereby holding the shovel securely in place.
When it is desired that the shovel B shall be so adjusted that its hole shall be directly over the block between the side bars of the standard A the short lug f is used which does not project beyond the under face of the shovel, and hence allowsthe plate F to bear upon the shovel. The ends of the plate should be so shaped and beveled as to offer no resistance to the turning of the soil by the plow. Owing to the slot f the plate F and the attached shovel B may be adjusted vertically without a corresponding vertical movement of the heel-bolt, the position of said heel-bolt in said slot being immaterial to the proper clamping of the shovel. Although I have described this plate in connection with the shovel it is obvious that it may be used for securing any character of share, adaptable to the ordinary shovel-plow.
In order to secure a scraper-blade O, or other blade of a like character to the back side of the standard A, I have devised the plate G which is provided with a hole 9 for the heel-bolt and a lug g on its lowerend for engagement with the hole in the blade (J, said lug being of sufficient length to project between the side bars of the standard A also being rectangular in shape to fit the hole in the blade. This blade (1 is vertically adjusted by moving the bolt D and the plate G vertically, which, owing to the slot f in the plate F may be accomplished without relation to the adjustment of said plate F.
It is obvious that with this device any desired adjustment may be easily and quickly made and the shovel or blade may be used entirely up without waste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a plow, the combination of the standard having a slot therein a shovel provided with a square hole in its upper end, a plate provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof and carrying a lug on each end adapted to fit the hole in said shovel or the slot in said standard, and a bolt adapted to secure said plate to said standard by passing through both substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a plow, the combination of the standard having a slot therein, a shovel provided with a sqaure hole in its upper end, a plate provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof, and carrying a lug on each end adapted to fit the hole in said shovel or the slot in said standard, one of said lugs being longer than the other, and a bolt adapted to secure said plate to said standard by passing through both, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. A plow attachment consisting of a slotted plate having a lug on each end one of which is shorter than the other, a plate carrying a lug on its lower end and provided with a bolt hole and a bolt passing through the slot in one plate and the hole in the other and carrying a nut thereon, the whole adapted to cause the proper securement of the shovel and scraper to the standard of aplow, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. TAYLOR.
