STERN COLLAR.
IIa-507,045. Patented Oct. 17,1893.
Igxzgir Joaejvh Stern,
UNITED STATES JOSEPH STERN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION Application led April 5, 1 8 93.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,- JOSEPH STERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and ,State of California, have invented a new and useful Collar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collars, and has special reference to fastening means for the same, and the object thereof is to dispense with the use of a collar-button at the back by making an integral fastening on the collar or connect the same thereto, and avoid chafing or rubbing of the back of the neck.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the partsthereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Inthe drawings: Figure l is a perspective view looking toward the inside of a lay-down collar, and a portion of aneck-band, showing the improved fastening connecting the two parts. Fig. 2 is a similar view and. arrangement of a standing collar. Fig. 3 is a plan` View of a lay-down collar unfolded, showing the improved fastening in connection therewith. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a standing collar shown supplied with the fastening. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the rear portion of a collar-band on an enlarged scale, showing the improved fastening in connection therewith and illustrating in dotted lines the positions of the corners of the head `when folded for insertion through a button-hole.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a collar of either folded or standing form and of suitable shape or material, having the back central part thereof formed with a depending arrow-head-shaped tongue or fastening 2, with angular slots 3 on op posite sides of the same, and consisting of a lower triangular-shaped head 4:, with corners 5, that are arranged to be bent inwardly toward each other to contract this portion of the tongue or fastening forinsertion through a button -hole, and a neck 6, that extends forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,045, dated October 17, 1893.
Serial No. 469,125. (No model.)
from the body of the collar and may be either integrally formed with or applied to said body.
In attaching a collar having the improved tongue or fastening, the corners 4 are bent inwardly toward each other, as before stated, in order to permit the said tongue or fastening to be inserted through the button-hole, and after said insertion the said corners are permitted to assume their normal position and provide shoulders 7, that extend laterally a greater distance than the length of the button-hole and thereby the tongue or fastening is prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged from the button-hole. The said tongue or fastening will be reinforced at such points as may be found necessary, and may be made of any number of plies, it being seen that the line of stitching along the -loWer edge of the collar is carried out through 'the tongue or fastening that rmly secures the edges of the same against separation. It will be observed that the tongue or fastening being without material surface projection will not interfere with the proper laundering of linen or fabric collars, and in the makeup of such class of collars the said tongue or fastening can be cut at the same time as the remaining portion of the collar.
It will be observed that the rear portion of the collar-band is cut away to form a V- shaped notch 8, within which is located the tongue or fastening whichis integral with the collar-band, the said tongue or fastening terminating at its lower end at or near the line of the lower edge of the collar-band. It will also be understood that the tongue or fastening may be conveniently employed in connection with paper collars, and in Whatever connection the attachment may be used it will dispense with the use of a collar-button at the back of the neck-band with the consequent advantage arising fromadisuse of said device.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or 4sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A collar provided with a cut-away por- IOO tion or opening, andatongue arranged in said In testimon y that I claim the foregoing as opening and having lateral shoulders to enmyown I have hereto affixed my signature 1n gage a button-hole, substantially as specified. the presence of two witnesses.
2. A collar having its band cut away to form JOSEPH STERN. 5 a V.shaped opening, and an arrow-shaped Witnesses:
tongue arranged within said opening to en- GODFREY COHEN,
gage a button-hole,'substantially as specified. E. M. KEYZER.
