Description

(No Model.)
- G. R. HARRIS.
METAL BINDING.
No. 507,002. Pate nted 000. 17,1893.
I I M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. HARRIS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL BINDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 507,002, dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed August 8, 1893. $erial No. 482,6 87. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. HARRIS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Bindings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to an improvement in metal bindings for the selvage edges of samples of suspender webs, ribbons, &c., and it consists of a binding adapted to embrace the edges of webs or ribbons and provided with means for engaging said webs or ribbons and with means for attaching the binding and the samples carried thereby to the sample card.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a view in perspective of the binding at tached to the samples of suspender webs. Fig. 2 is a View of the binding. -Fig. 3 is a view in section through the binding.
A represents a clasp or binding preferably made of sheet metal. The clasp is made from a blank preferably rectangular in form and provided with teeth a on its longer edges and with tongues b on its ends, the latter forming continuations of the front side of the clasp. This blank is folded or bent lengthwise centrally and the teeth a on one edge thereof are bent so as to point toward the teeth on the other edge and engage and penetrate the samples of webs or ribbons introduced between the teeth.
The samples of goods to be fastened by the binding or clamp are introduced between the teeth, and the two sides of the clamp forced together causing the teeth to penetrate the samples and secure the latter together and the clamp to the samples. During the act of closing the two sides of the clamp, the end tongues b are bent over the rear face of the clamp thus preventing a separation or opening of the two faces or jaws of the clamp.
The clamp or binding is provided on its rear face with an opening 0 for the passage of the bendable prongs d. The prongs can be in the form of an ordinary paper fastener having a head greater in diameter than the opening 0, so that when the prongs are passed through the opening from the inside of the clamp the head will be engaged by the webs or ribbons and held firmly in place thereby. If desired the prongs can be stamped up out of the metal composing the clamp. In any event however they are to be of sufficient length to readily pass through a sample card and be turned down against the rear face thereof for securing the clamp with the samples carried thereby to the sample card.
It is evident that numerous slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts herein shown without departing from. the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clamp for attaching samples of suspender webs, ribbons &c. to sample cards, consisting of a bent plate adapted to overlap the ends of the webs or ribbons and having teeth to engage the edge of said Webs or ribbons and provided on its rear face with bendable prongs adapted to be passed through a sample card and bent up against the rear face of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture a clamp for attaching samples of suspender webs, ribbons &c. to sample cards consisting of a bent plate adapted to overlap the ends of the webs or ribbons and having teeth to engage the webs or ribbons and provided with an opening through its rear face and an attaching device consisting of a head and bendable prongs, the latter passing through the hole in the rear face of the clamp, substantially as set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture a clamp for attaching samples of suspender webs. ribbons &c. to sample cards consisting of a bent plate adapted to overlap the ends of the webs or ribbons and having teeth to engage the edge of said webs or ribbons and specification in the presence of'tw'o subscribtengues to overlap the rear face of the bent ing witnesses. p ate, and bendable prongs projecting from A the rear face and. adapted to be passed OH ARLES HARRIS 5 through a sample card, substantially as set Witnesses:
forth. J 0s. E. AUSTRIAN,
In testimony whereof I have signed this WILLIAM FREEMAN.
