OPERA-GLASS HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,012, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed April 24, 1893. Serial No. 471,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH MURPHY, a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Opera-Glass Holder, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to understand, make, and use the same.
My invention relates to opera glass holders designed to enable a person using an opera glass to hold the same with one hand and thereby avoid raising the hand to the height necessary when the opera glass is used without such holder therefor.
In opera glass handles as the same have been heretofore manufactured no provision has been made for focusing the opera glasses and it has therefore heretofore been necessary in focusing opera glasses, whether the same have been provided with handles or not, to use both hands therefor.
The object of my invention is to obtain an opera glass holder by means of which the opera glass can be held for use by one hand and focused by such hand.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and hereinbefore referred to, Figure 1, is a front view of an opera glass having a holderembodying myinvention securedthereon; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, Viewed in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 3, a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 4, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 4, a side elevation of that end of the holder embodying my invention by which the device is secured to an opera glass.
I have employed the same letter of reference to indicate a given part where more than one view thereof is shown in the several figures of the drawings.
A is an opera glass; (It abeing the respective barrels thereof; and a the bar forming part of the frame-work of the opera glass and connecting such barrels together.
B is the handle of the opera glass holder embodying my invention.
0 is a ferrule on handle B.
D is a yoke connecting handle 0 withtube E. Yoke D consists of the end (I designed to extend into handle B; the body part (2'; the
yoke part (1 and the portion (i extending beyond the yoke d and into tube E and by means of which such yoke D is secured to such tube.
F isthe forked end of the device embodying my invention adapted to be secured to the upper end of tube E and f f are the prongs thereof adapted to extend around bar a of the opera glass frame and be secured thereon by means of screw f extending through prongs ff.
G is a. rotatable sleeve by the rotation of which an opera glass is and has heretofore been focused.
g is a beveled gear wheel on sleeve or tube G.
H is a rotatable spindle having beveled gear wheel h rigidly secured on the upper end thereof to intermesh with the beveled gear wheel g and extending downwardthrough the tube E to step H in body part 01 of yoke D. Beveled gear wheels g and It may, respectively, be constructed of metal, rubber, or other preferred material. If constructed of rubber the gear teeth may be omitted and wheel 9 turned by the friction occasioned by wheel h pressing firmly thereon.
I is a thumb wheel rigidly secured to spindle or shaft H.
X X are the thumb and fingers, respectively, of the hand of a person holding an opera glass by means of the handle of the device embodying my invention and with the thumb and forefinger of the hand in contact with thumb wheel I on the edges thereof extending in front and back beyond the arms 01 d of yoke D.
By the rotation of the thumb wheel I and shaft H, to which such thumb wheel is rigidly secured, the sleeve or tube G, on which is rigidly secured beveled gear g, is rotated by means of beveled gear wheel h'rigidly secured on shaft H and intermeshing with such beveled gear g.
