,Leners Patent No: 107,362, cated september 4a.- 1ero.
IMPROVED SPITTOON-HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'che sama To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAUNCEY O. HAL'EY, of Westtield,.i11 the county. of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Spittoon-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description, and which said drawing constitutes part of this Specification, and 1'ep'1'esents, in
Figure' 1, a side view of my invention..
This invention relates to an instrument to be used for removing and cleansing spittoons; and
It consists ot' two levers, which are pivoted together, and terminate in two jaws; the lower jaw is wedgeshaped, and has a recess therein, in which rests the bottom rim of the spittoon, and the upper jaw has alsov a recess therein, and is hooked, to hold the upper rim of the spittoon, so that the spittoou may be seized and carried out and cleaned without touching it with the hands, and still be held firmly during the operation of cleaning it.
That others skilled in the art may beable to make and use my invention, I will now proceedto describe its construction and mode ot' operation.
In the drawingf a and b represent the two jaws, the lower jaw, b, being wedge-shaped and pointed at c, and havinga recess, d, made therein.
The jaw @extending in nearly a horizontal direction, has a shank, f, in which are made a series of horizontal holes, t", and the said 'shank is elongated into the handle b.
The upper jaw a is hooked at n, and a protuberance or swell is made at c', which forms a recess at c.
This jaw has also a shank, j, having a series of holes, e', made therein, and is elongated into thehandle ct', the two handles, with the terminating jaws a and t, forming levers, which are pivoted together at any tween the jaws, by opening the handles 'a' and b', and thrusting thejaw'b underneath the spittoon, which said jaw, being wedge-shaped, passes under quite easily,'until the Abottom rim of the spittoon rests in the recess d, the more central part Vof the spittoon rest-ing'npon the part e.
The upper rim of the Spittoon will then rest inthe recess c in the upper jaw, and the end n ot' saidv jaw, being hooked, will press uponA the upper part of the spittoon, and `prevent it from swaying horizontally or sidewise.
In this manner spittoons which have become positively :filthy may be cleaned without the disagreeable necessity ot' touching them with the hands.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent, is-v l A spittoon-holder, consisting of thev two levers a,
and l1', having the holes i i therein, and pivoted together, said levers terminating in the jaws a, and b,
the jaw b being wedge-shaped, and having'the recess d therein, andthe jaw c being hooked at n, and hav. ing the recess c, all constructed and operating sub# 'stantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
