Be it known that I, EDWARD LIONEL LATIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tool handles in general, and it has particular reference to an improved hammer handle, the same being provided with a recess constituting a receptacle in which a small tool, such as a nail set, the use of which is frequently required, may be placed for safe keeping when not in use.

Among the numerous small tools frequently used by carpenters, and work finishers, the nail set is one'which, on account of its small size and its general resemblance to an ordinary nail, is one of the most illusive and easily lost; and much time is frequently wasted in searching for this particular tool when it is needed for present use.

The object of the present invention is to provide a hammer handle having a recess or receptacle in which the nail set may be safelykept so as to be at all times available for use, and a further object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved closure whereby the nail set will be securely retained in the recess or receptacle in such a manner as to be capable of being very easily and quickly withdrawn when required for use.

lVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a hammer having a handle constructed in accordance with the invention, and showing a nail set in position for safe keeping. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the outside of the cap or'closure. Fig. 3 isa side view of the cap or closure. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the inner side of the cap or closure.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The hammer handle 1 is provided with a longitudinal bore or recess 2 formed in the grip end of said handle, said bore or recess being of suitable dimensions to receive a nail set 3 and a pad or cushion 4. the latter being permanently secured in the inner end of the recess. A cap or closure 0 is provided, the same comprising a plate 5 which is provided with apertures 6 for the passage of screws or similar fastening members whereby said plate is secured upon the end of the hammer handle, said plate being provided with an aperture 7 registering with, the bore or recess 2 which latter is preferably formed in the longitudinal center of the hammer handle. The inner side of the plate 5 is provided with a pin 8 upon which a slide 9 is pivotally supported, said slide being provided with a stud 1O constituting a handle which projects through an arcuate slot 11 in the plate 5,

and by means of which the slide 9 may be manipulated; said slide being normally retained by the action of a spring 12 in such a position as to partly obstruct the aperture 7 and to prevent the nail set 3 from passing therethrough. The pin 8 and spring 12 are partly accommodated in a socket or recess 13 in the end of the hammer handle. The slide 9 is provided with a curved flange 14 adapted to engage the side of the nail set, which latter will thus be held securely within the recess 2 without wabbling or vibrating.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. When the hammer is held poised in the right hand of the operator, the slide 9 may be mani ulated by pressing the stud 10 with the thumb of the left hand to move said slide against the tension of the s ring 12 of the aperture 7, thus permitting the nail set to drop, by gravity, into the palm of the left hand of the operator whose fingers sup 7 ort the end of the hammer handle. The nai set will thus be found instantly available whenever needed for use. To restore the nail set into position, it' is simply pushed through the aperture 7, which is only partially obstructed by the slide 9, and the latter being readily pushed back against the tension of the spring 12 by the pressure of the nail set, it being found unnecessary to manipulate the slide in order to restore the nail set to the bore or receptacle;
