Description

G. A..RO0NE STAKE LOG- BIND (No Model.)
Patented 0ct. 3,.1893.
UNITED STATES ATENT Prion.
GEORGE A. ROONEY, OF CLOQUET, MINNESOTA.
STAKE LOG-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 505,848, dated. October 3, 1893.
Application filed January 23, 1898. Serial Ito-459,398. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. ROONERY, of Cloquet, in the county of Carlton and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake Log-Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent1on,such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in stake log binders designed for simplicity and rigidity of construction and security of operation.
A further object of myinvention is to supply a binder by the use of which, the necessity of using the large amount of chain now utseil to bind logs on a car is completely obvia e My invention more particularly resides in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullydescribed and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my binder attached to a car, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Reference being had to the above figures, A represents a cross beamof an ordinary fiat car, the end of the cross beam being slotted centrally, and into which slot B is adapted to pass the curved metal stake or bar 0.
In order to retain the bar or stake in a pro-- jecting position, as shown in Fig. 1, I have provided the pin D which passes through the cross beam A and hole E in the stake, and to further resist the pressure of the logs against the stake I have supplied the metal band F which passes around the end of the beam A thus confining the stake O wiihin the slot B.
Passing through the beam A at the required distance from the inner edge of the slot are the pins G and H, theirobject being to guide the stake in the slot, when the pin D is withdrawn.
To prevent the loss of the pin D, I have secured it to the car by means of the chain I.
When it is desired to unload the car the pin D is removed, and the stakeimmediately assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, being prevented from passing entirely through the slot by means of the metal ring (a) and the logs are free to roll from the car.
To facilitate the removingof the pin, I have constructed it with one end bent at right angles, and to prevent its being jolted out of engagement with the stake I place the portion J over the projecting L shaped pin or catch K.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts of my stake log binder being thus made known, the operation and the advantages of the same will, it is thought, be readily understood,
I have described the best form and construction now used by me; but it will be understood that I intend to cover mechanical equivalents when such are substituted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein described stake log binder, consisting of the curved stake (J, said stake being adapted to pass into slot B in a cross beam or other portion of a car, in combination with pin D adapted to pass through said stake substantially in the manner and forthe purpose set forth.
2. The herein described stake log binder, consisting of the curved stake C, said stake being adapted to pass into the slot B in a cross beam or other portion of a car, in combination with one or more pins G passing across said slot and L shaped pin D adapted to pass through said stake substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. RODNEY.
