Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENIAMINO SCARINOI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,298, dated September 19, 1893.
Application filed May 1, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, BENIAMINO SCARINOI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, Penusylvania, have invented an Improvement in Making Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the art of making shoes, and more particularly to the mode of cutting out the material from which the shoes are formed, by which I secure a novel blank for uppers, which may be made into a neat, durable, well shaped shoe.
In the manufacture of shoes there has always been a considerable waste of material, due to the manner of cutting out the uppers, 850. By lessening this waste it is plain that the cost of production, and consequently the cost to the consumer may be materially lessened, at the same time preserving the quality or grade of goods.
It is the object of my invention to produce a new article in which not only the material now wasted may be saved but the amount of labor required in the manufacture may be appreciably reduced, while a more durable and better article for the same or less price is made. I accomplish this object by a novel mode of cutting and putting the material together, by which I am able to produce the new article as described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim appended to this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a piece of leather I or other material out after the desired pattern. Fig. 2 is a side view of the shoe made after my pattern.
In cutting the material, I place the pattern as usual upon the leather or other material, and follow the lines, shown in full, and by practically two operations of the cutting edge, the uppers are made consisting of the vamp, counters, fronts, quarters, tongue and back, all in one piece.
In the blank shown in Fig. 1 it will be seen that I form said blank of a single piece of material by following the pattern having curved lines substantially as shown at S S and T T and according to the lines forming the outer boundary of said figure, which boundary con- Serial No. 472.451- (ITo model.)
sists of the back edges E E that are joined in the finished shoe, and the lower edges Q Q to which the sole is secured. By cutting along the lines such as shown at S S, T T I form the integral tongues extending to the top of the shoe with flaps O U which overlap the counters B B when the shoe is placed upon the last shaped, and formed, and the said flaps then being neatly and suitably secured to the counter. The back edges E E of the blank meet together in the usual way and are neatly secured by suitable means. The vamp A, counters B B, quarters O O, tongue F and backs are all thus formed in one piece and can be easily applied to the last and formed into a neatly shaped shoe with little sewing or stitching and the shoe finished in the usual way, producing a shoe which is well shaped, and more economically made than shoes generally of this type. By extending the out along the lines S S, as shown in the drawings, I make it possible to easily and properly shape the shoe, in lasting, dispensing with the use of extra pieces found in shoes of this class as now made; and I furthermore save the material that is ordinarily cut from the sides and wasted when the uppers are made of more than one piece.
Instead of a knife suitable dies may be employed for cutting the material; and this cutting may be done by machinery instead of hand.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a shoe formed from an integral blank, consisting of the vamp A, integral tongue F, flaps or sides 0 O, separated from the tongue by the curved slits T T, and from the counters by the curved slits S S, the said flaps being adapted to overlap the counters and secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
