Description

(-No Model.)
B. SCARINCI. SLIPPER.
No. 518 ,o.78. Patentvd Apr.- 10, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENIAMINO scARINoI, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SLIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,078, dated April 10, 1894. Application filed November 17,1893. Serial No. 491,259. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENIAMINO SoARINcI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of slippers, and it has for its object to produce a slipper in which the whole upper is made of a single piece of material whereby not only a saving of material is effected in cutting the blank, but a more durable article is made in which the seams now usually found in this type of footwear are dispensed with; and at the same time a well shaped and neat slipper is obtained from such a blank.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 2, is a side View of the same.
To form the blank I may take either a single or double thickness of material and cut the blank as shown in the drawings where A indicates the Vamp from which projectsthe integral tongue F. The latter is separated from the sides or counters B B by the graceful curves S S, and is preferably finished at its free end by two symmetrical eurves R. The side flaps O O are separated from the main body of the counters by the downwardly extending slits T which extend slghtly beyond the point of contact of the tongue with the counters B. By d'ownwardly extending I mean to express the fact that the slits extend toward the sole edges of the blank. These slits are curved slightly toward the heel but terminate in tang'ents to the curves at the free ends of the flaps O. O. Extending across the blank and separating the two flapsfrom the Vamp are two slits Q, ending at the web I of the tongue. This Web is separated from the flaps by slits U, thus completing the tongue F, as will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The flaps C are provided preferably with slits E, which are suitably stitched around the Sides, for the introduction of means for fastening the slipper to the foot, such as a ribbon. In the spaces formed by the separation of the tongue and the flap, as before described, I preferably secure re-inforcing pieces, K, of some suitable material, shown in dotted lines, which are desirabl y of somematerial of lighter grade than the rest of the slipper. This blank so described may be easily and readily shaped and the edges exposed may be suitably ornamented bystitches, embroidery or the like, inv
any way well known to those skilled in the art.
I may mention that in the slippers made from my blank I find that I save about fourteen per cent. of the material, which advantage and those of durability, neatness, and consequent cheapness of the article compared with similar articles now on the market, render my invention of great utility.'
I claiin as my invention- Thev heroin described integral blank for slippers, consisting of the Vamp, A, the tongue F, connected thereto by Athe narrow web, I; the counters, B, with the flaps,'O, separated from the counters by the slits, T, extending downwardly to the rear to a point about midvway' between the upper and`1ower edges of the counters, and closing the op'enings on each sidel of the slipper formed by cutting the said flaps from the counters, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENIAMINO SCARINOI.
