Description

'UNITED STATES PATENT Orifice.
JOHN H. GRISWOLD, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,978, dated September 12, 1893.
Application ala April 26, 189s.
To a/ZZ whom tf-may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HUDSON GRIS- WOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Sash Fasteners and Stops; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of attachments for window sashes, the object of which is to stop and to lock or hold the sashes at any. point desired. y
It consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described, and in their location with respect to the two sashes whereby either or both may be moved to and held fast at any point desired.
The object of my invention is to lock the sashes at any point desired and to stop and hold them independent of weights orv other balances, if required.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my device as applied to the locking or fastening of both sashes.
Figure l is a side elevation of my fastener and stop showing its application to the sashes. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
A is a plate having an upright arm which forms a bearing piece c. In the form shown, this arm projects from the plate at an acute angle, so that when said plate is screwed to thetop of the lower sash B, just opposite the face of the stile c of the upper sash C, there will be left between the face of the stile and the face of the bearing piece a an upwardly Iiaring space. Into this space a roller D is freely dropped, said roller having a diameter greater than the width of the space below and less than its width above. It, therefore, follows that if the lower sash be lifted the roller, bearing on the stile of the upper sash, will turn and move downwardly, and being cramped and bound in the narrowing space in which it is fitted, will prevent the sash from any further upward movement. The same result follows the'downward movement of the upper sash. The oppositeeffect results from the application of force to pull the Serial 110.471,926. (No model.)
lower sash down or to push the upper sash up, for in these cases the tendency of the roller is to turn and move upin the widening space, thus relieving the sashes. Now, in order to better hold the roller, so that it will not drop out, and to provide for its control so that the sashes can be positively relieved, to enable theY operator to set them to positions desired and there to fasten them, I have fthe swinging lever plate E. This, atvlone end, has a linger-piece c, and at the other end isformed to carry and conne the roller, Without Vinterfering with its function. To this end it is forked to straddle the upright bearing piece a and the extremities of its fork are turned upwardly and backwardly as shown at e. Within these curved extremities are freely journaled the end pins or gudgeons d of roller D. The plate E simply l rests upon plate A, and its linger-piece being upturned enables said plate to fulcrum easily upon plate A. By pressing down on the finger-piece, the inner end of plateE will be raised and the roller D will be thereby ,thisshould be deemed desirable. p Having thus described my invention, what wI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the lower and upper window sashes, the plate A secured to the top of the lower sash and having the angled arm forming a bearing-piece opposite to and separated from the stile of the upper sash by a space increasing in width upwardly, the
roller fitted in said space and having a di-A ameter greater than the width of `the-lower portion of the space and less than its upper portion, and a swinging lever plate engaging the roller and adapted to lift it to and support it in the Wider portion of said space, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my salicll1 lever plate being fnlcrnmed on plate A, hand.
wit a finger-piece on one end, and a forked opposite end embracing the angled arm 'of JOHN H' GRISWOLD' plate A and formed with curved extremities Witnesses:
to receive `mld journal the ends of the roller, S. H. NOURSE,
substantially as herein described. H. F. ASCHECK.
