UMBRELLA-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,945, dated September 12, 1893.

Application filed March 25, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improvement in Umbrella-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a neat and attractive case for the reception of an umbrella when the latter is notin use, the case being of such character that when it is applied to the umbrella it will present the appearance of a cane. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1, is a view of the case showing the same partly opened at the top. Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional View of the lower end of the case; and Fig. 3, is a sectional View of the upper end of the case illustrating the method of fastening the flap of the same.

The case consists of a tube A of thin flexible leather which can be folded into small compass when the case is not in use, the grain side of the leather being presented on the outside of the case and the flesh side on the inside of said case, so that while the outside .of the tube presents an attractive appearance,

the inner side has a soft, velvety surface which will not mar or injure the fabric composing the cover of the umbrella. The tube A is slitted some distance from the top and has overlapping flaps a and b which are united by means of catches, each comprising an elastic lug d on one flap and a tapering eyelet f on the other flap, although, if desired, the slitted upper end of the tube may be united by lacing applied to hooks or buttons on opposite sides of the slit. To thelower portion of the tube is fitted a socket B preferably of Wood, the opening in this socket being adapted for the reception of the projecting end and ferrule of the stick of the umbrella to which it fits snugly, and to the end of this socket is fitted a ferrule D comprising an end plug of metal and a sheet metal tube fitted thereto and serving to confine to the socket the lower end of the tube A, so that when the umbrella is inserted in the case the latter has Serial No. 46 7,599. a uniform taper from end to end and thus presents the appearance of a cane, all portions of the umbrella except the handle, being covered and hidden from view by the case. The socket B completely fills the space between the casing A and the projecting stick and ferrule of the umbrella so as to render the end portion of the case perfectly rigid, as is necessary in order to properly simulate a cane.

The leather of which the case is formed may be dyed or colored to imitate any desired wood.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The within described umbrella case, the same consisting of a tube of leather slitted and provided with fastenining devices at the upper end and having at the lower end an internal socket extending throughput the length of the projecting end of the umbrella stick, and fitting snugly thereto, and a ferrule applied to the lower end of said stick, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the tubular case, the internal socket extending throughout the length of the projecting end of the umbrella stick and fitting snugly thereto, and a ferrule applied to the lower end of said socket, and having a tubular portion between which and the socket the lower end of the case is confined, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of the tubular case, the internal socket extending throughout the length of the projecting end of the umbrella stick and fitting closely thereto, and aferrule applied to the-lower end of said socket and consisting of an end plug of metal and a sheet metal tube fitted to said plug, that portion of the tube which projects above the plug serving to confine the lower end of the case to the socket, substantially as specified.
