CAN-OPENER:
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,381, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed October 31, 1892. Serial No. 450,445. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WILLIAMS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Varnish-Can Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

The object of this invention is to provide a device for opening varnish cans with ease and facility and at a comparatively small cost; and the invention consists in the improved can-opener and in the arrangement as herein set forth and finally pointed out i the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures Where they occur, Figure'1,represents a plan or top view of a can opener embodying my improvement; and Fig. 2, a section taken through the line 00, of the same. Fig. 3, represents, in elevation, a modification of a portion of the same which I shall designate as the cap and Fig. 4, represents, in elevation a varnish can and my improved opener adjusted thereon in operative position.

The modification shown in Fig. 3, represents the cap with a slot, d, formed in the side thereof, in which the handle works laterally; the object of this construction is to provide increased leverage in case a lifting power should be exerted upon the handle.
In operating the device the hook is forced through the top of the can or nozzle until the cap is snugly seated thereon; the handle is then turned to the right or left until the hook, which turns with it, engages, at a distance from the point where it enters, with the inner surface of the cover or .top, when, if the hook be in the relative position shown in Fig. 2, by pressing downward upon the handle the top or cover of the can will be easily forced from its seat or fastening, as will be manifest. If the hook be so adjusted in the handle as to occupy a position opposite to that shown in Fig. 2, then a lifting power must be exerted upon the handle, as provided for, in Fig. 3, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The improved can opener herein described, which consists of a chambered cap, a hook journaled therein, a handle, movably mounted upon said cap and rigidly secured to the shank of said hook; said parts being arranged in relation to one another and operating, as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein described can opener comprising a handle, one end of which is provided with a chambered cap, and a shouldered hook projecting below the cap, the shoulder of the hook being adjacent to the rim of the cap, substantially as set forth.
