Description

(#0 Model.) I W. MILLEN.
HAND PROTECTOR FOR CANS.
No. 566,085.. Patented Aug. 18,1896.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR A Tron/15m;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MILLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAND-PROTECTOR FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,085, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed October 21, 1895- Serial No. 566,433. T0 model-l To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MILLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Protectors for Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to hand-protectors; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this kind which is adapted to be connected with the head of a can, so as to protect the hand of the operator while opening the can.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved handprotector, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of a can and of my improved hand-protector connected therewith.
In the drawings forming part of this application, A represents part of a can, one of the heads of which is shown at B, and connected therewith by means of the pin or prong O is my improved hand-protector D, which comprises a segmental disk or plate, one side of which is cut away to near the center thereof, as shown at E, and through the central portion of which is formed a hole F, through which is inserted the pin or prong C, said pin or prong being provided with a shank, which passes through the hole F, and
with a head G, by which it is held in place.
The disk or plate D is provided with a segmental flange or rim, the outer surface of which is provided with a groove K, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. When it is desired to remove or cut out the head of the can, the pin or prong O is inserted therein and the holder is grasped by one hand, so that the fingers and thumb thereof inclose and fit around the segmental flange or rim H and the knife or other device is operated by the other hand, and as the cutting progresses the holder maybe revolved on a pin or prong O, as will be readily understood, and there will thus be no danger of cutting the hand by which the can is held or otherwise injuring the same.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a hand-protector for cans, comprising a segmental plate having a raised segmental flange which is grooved or undercut on its outer edge, having also a central hole for the reception of a pivot and a pointed pin or pivot adapted to enter said hole and the can-head, all arranged and constructed substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of October, 1895.
WILLIAM MILLEN.
