CORKSCREW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,975, dated July 25, 1893.

Application filed June 2, 1892- Serial No. 435,266. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.

My invention consists in the improvements in cork-screws hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of my improved cork-screw.

Fig. 2, is a perspective view of sleeve and collar for supporting the yoke on the stem of the cork-screw. Fig. 3, is an end view of the same looking from the lower end thereof.

The object of my invention is to construct a cork-screw with a yoke thereon adapted to be screwed down upon the top of the bottle asthe screw enters the cork, and when the yoke contacts with the top of the bottle the continued turning of the screw operates to raise the cork up within the yoke, the sharp corners of which then grip the cork and turn it with the screw, thereby loosening it from the bottle, so that it can easily be withdrawn; also to construct the yoke with a sharp cutting corner thereon, which operates to cut the wire securing the cork when it is being forced down upon the top of the bottle by the action of the screw entering the cork.

In the construction shown of my improved cork-screw, A is the handle; B the screw stem; and O the screw, these parts being of ordinary construction.

Upon the stem B at the upper end of the screw 0, I place a sleeve D (Fig. 2) having on the lower end thereof a collar E and upon this sleeve D, I place the collar F of a yoke F, which collar F surrounds the sleeve D and rests upon the collar E thereon; and through a hole in the sleeve D and the stem B above the collar F of yoke F, I place a pin f which firmly secures the yoke F in place on the stem D so that it will rotate thereon between the collar E of the sleeve D and the pin f. Around the lower end of said yoke F is an annular rim G adapted to rest upon the top of the bottle, and on the inside of the rim G is a sharp annular corner or edge H which operates, when the yoke F is forced down 'upon the top of a bottle by the action of the screw 0 in the cork, to cut the wire securing the cork in the bottle, so that the Wire is cut and the cork withdrawn at one and the same operation. During this operation, the screw 0 after entering the cork until the sharp annular edge H of the rim G on the yoke F has cut the wire securing the cork, first operates to draw the cork up into the rim G until arms of the yoke F grip the upper end of the cork, which then turns with the yoke and screw, and is easily withdrawn from the bottle.

Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination in a cork-screw, of a sleeve as D provided with a collar as E on the lower end thereof, on the stem adjacent to the upper end of the screw, with a yoke as F having an annular rim as G H thereon and provided with a collar as F surrounding said sleeve D, so as to rot-ate freely thereon, and a pin as f passing through said sleeve and the stem of the screw above the collar F of the yoke operating thereon, and securing said sleeve and yoke from vertical movement on the stem of the screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination in a cork-screw, of a stem as B terminating in a screw as C, a sleeve as D, having a collar as E on the lower end thereof, on said stem B adjacent to the upper end of the screw 0, with a yoke as F having an annular rim as G, H thereon and mounted on said sleeve D, and a pin as f passing through said sleeve D, and the stem B above the collar F of said yoke, so' as to prevent the vertical movement of either the sleeve D or the yoke F mounted thereonon the stem B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
