To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY W. NoYns, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket Cork-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in pocket cork extractors of the screw character and particularly to such as are adapted to have the screw portion folded into the handle for convenience in carrying in the pocket, and particularly to screws of the class which combine a plate or fulcrum to facilitate the drawing of a cork, the object of this invention being to combine a screw withor without a plate or fulcrum in a tubular case; and the invention consists in the con struction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a tubular case 2 closed at one end which I will hereafter term the inner end, by a cap 3, and having at its outer end a collar 4 which forms a contracted opening 5, that is an opening of less diameter than the internal diameter of the case. One side of the case is left open forming a longitudinal slot 6 the outer portion 7 of which is wider than the main portion and intersects the opening 5. Within the tube and free to slide therein is a head 8 to which the shank 9 of a screw 10 is pivoted, the screw being either a wire screw as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or a forged screw as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. On the shank of the screw is a collar or shoulder 11 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Pivoted to the inner end of the head 8 is a plate 12 formed at its outer end with a hookshaped finger 13 which has a cutting edge and on its inner edge with laterally bent lugs 14 which are adapted to straddle the shank of the screw and which also form stops to prevent the withdrawal of the plate when the head 8 is in its retiredposition.

The plate 12 is adapted to be -partially drawn out of the case as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings so that the finger 13 may be employed for removing metal caps of bottles or for cutting wires. When it is desired to use the screw the head 8 by means of the plate 12 is moved forward causing the screw 10 to pass out of the tube 2 through the opening 5 in the collar 4. When the lugs 14 have passed the opening 5 the plate may be turned downward out of the tube and the screw also turned down at right angles to the tube. The head is then moved inward to bring the shank of the screw to the center of the handle. The shoulder 11 now riding upon the outside of the tube gives sufficient friction to hold the head in the desired position. It may be here stated that the head is formed with a slot 15 to receive the end of the shank when it is turned downward, and with a slot 16 to receive the plate 12 so that they both have a firm support in the head. With the screw in the center of the handle, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, it is readily turned into the cork of a bottle. hen entered into the cork to the desired extent, the handle is once more moved on the head so as to draw the screw and plate to the outer end of the handle at which point the flange 11 standing in the enlarged portion 7 of the slot in the handle coacts with the same to permit the handle to be turned on the shank. The lugs 14 are then brought to bear upon the edge 17 of the neck 18 of the bottle forming a fulcrum upon which the handle may be turned so as to raise the screw and extract the cork as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. When the cork is withdrawn and removed from the screw, the partsfcan be retired into the handle.

Instead of mounting the screw at the outer end of the head and the plate at the inner end, these may be reversed, and as shown in Fig. 7 the shank'9 of the screw mounted in the inner end of the head 8, and the plate 12 mounted in the forward end of the head 8 which will be formed with clearance slots The parts operate in substantially the same way as before described except that the inner end of the handle will be lifted to extract the cork instead of depressed. Or instead of arranging the plate 12 to slide within the case, it may normally stand outside of the case as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings in which construction, instead of forming short lugs 14, I will form the plate with long lugs 19 which will partially encircle the case so as to engage therewith to hold the plate in its raised position. In this construction the parts operate in the same way as first described, and the case is the same except that instead of forming the case with a ring or collar 4, the outer end will be turned inward to form'a stop flange 20 which flange arrests the movement of the head 8 and prevents its withdrawal from the case.

I claimz 1. The combination with a tubular case handle having a contracted opening at one end and having a slot therein along one side thereof, the outer end of the slot adjacent to said opening being enlarged, of a head mounted to slide in said case and of greater diam eter than the diameter of the opening in the end of the case, a cork-screw the shank of which is pivoted to said. head and adapted to extend out through said. slot, a flange on said shank in position to engage with the edges of said slot outside the case to hold the corkscrew at right angles to said case.

2. The combination with a tubular case handle having a slot therein along one side thereof, one end of said slot being enlarged, of a head mounted to slide in said case, a corkscrew the shank of which is pivoted to said head and adapted to extend out through said slot, a flange on said shank in position to engage with the edges of said slot outside the case to hold the cork-screw at right angles to said case, a fulcrum plate pivotally connected with said case and adapted to engage the neck of a bottle when the cork screw head is moved to a position where the shank extends through the enlarged portion of the slot, said enlarged portion of the slot being of sufflcient size to allow the said flange, when disengaged from the edges of the narrower portion of the slot, to pass freely therethrough, whereby a pivotal movement of the screw shank is permitted to draw the cork.

3. The combination with a tubular case handle having a slot therein along one side thereof, of an elongated head mounted to slide in said case, a cork screw the shank of which is pivoted to said head at one end, a fulcrum plate adapted to engage a bottle neck and having a shank which is pivoted to the other end of said head, both of said shanks being adapted to extend out through said slot, means for holding said screw shank rigidly at right angles to said case throughout the greater portion of the len th thereof, and means for releasing said holding means when the head is moved to one end of said case, to permit said screw shank to have a pivotal movement with respect to said handle in drawing the cork.

4. The combination with a tubular case handle having a slot therein along one side thereof, a head mounted to slide in said case, a cork screw the shank of which is pivoted to said head and adapted to extend out through said slot, a fulcrum plate adapted to engage a bottle neck pivotally connected with said case, means for holding said screw shank rig- -1dly at right angles to said handle near the middle portion thereof, and means for releasing sa1d holding means when the head 18 moved to one end of said case, to permit sa1d screw shank to have a pivotal movement with respect to said handle in drawing the cork.
